Abstract
A brazing alloy which may be used in the large-scale soldering of aluminium alloy sheets, without the need for a flux, comprises 4-20%; 0.4-10% Mg; 0.01-1% Bi and the balance Al. Pref. the compsn. is 6-12% Si; 0.7-1.5% Mg; 0.1-0.15% Bi and the balance Al. The brazing takes place in a non-oxidising atmos. at >550 degrees C pref. 590-600 degrees C. Compared with prior art this alloy has greater wetting props. and can fill larger gaps with braze alloy, thus making it more suitable in the brazing of large numbers of Al alloy plates, such as in heat exchangers.
