Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0966485/C1/1> and their alkali metal and ammonium salts, where R1 is a C1- 5 alkyl radical, each of R2 and R3 is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 6 alkanoyl radical, each of R4 and R5 is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 5 alkyl radical, n is 1, 2 or 3, and X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C1- 5 alkyl or trifluoromethyl radical and is para to the side chain when other than hydrogen, and compounds of the formula: <FORM:0966485/C1/2> in which R1, R5, X and n are as defined above and m is zero or an integer less than n, and the preparation of compounds II by hydrolysis of a nitrile of the general formula: <FORM:0966485/C1/3> (which may be prepared by the process of Specification 966,486) and of compounds I by hydrolysis of the methoxy ether II and, if desired, subsequent acylation of the free hydroxyl group and/or esterification of the carboxylic groups, and also pharmaceutical compositions containing compounds I or II. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the compounds I or II together with an inert pharmaceutical diluent or carrier, and may be in the form of tablets, capsules, an orally administrable aqueous suspension or a parenterally administrable sterile solution of an alkali metal salt of the active ingredient. The compounds are anti-hypertensive agents and mammalian decarboxylase inhibitors.
