Abstract
Aqueous Gelatin compositions contain as coating aids from 0,1 to 1 gram of a watersoluble salt of maleopimaric acid (the DielsAlder addition product of maleic anhydride and levopimaric acid) per pound of the coating composition. The compositions also may contain an additional coating aid of the formula : <FORM:0854087/IV(b)/1> wherein R is H or an alkyl group of at least 5 carbon atoms, at least one R being alkyl and the total number of carbon atoms in the R groups being at least 8, X is -COOM, -CH2 COOM or -(CH2)2-COOM, M is an alkali metal and n is an integer from 1 to 12. In the examples, the ammonium, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine or sodium salts of maleopimaric acid are used, and the additional coating aid is disodium N-carbo-(p-tert. octylphenoxy pentaethoxy) glutamate. Compounds of the general formula I above are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula 4 (R)-Ar-O-(CH2. CH2. O)n H, Ar being a benzene residue, with an isocyanate ester of the formula OCN-CHR1.COOR11 wherein R1 is COOR11, -CH2 COOR11 or -CH2-CH2COOR11 and R11 is an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbons, followed by treatment of the ester formed with a base such as caustic soda to obtain the sodium or other salt thereof. Thus dimethyl a -iso cyanate glutarate is heated with p-tert. octyl-phenoxy-tetraethoxy ethanol and the product dissolved in alcohol and heated with sodium hydroxide to give disodium N-carbo-(p-tert. octylphenoxy-pentaethoxy) glutamate. Ammonium maleopimarate is prepared by stirring maleopimaric acid in 28% aqueous ammonia. The sodium, and mono-, di- and triethanolamine salts are similarly prepared. Specification 834,525 and U.S.A.
