Description

The invention relates to an insert intended to be attached in an element, for fixing and electrically contacting an electrical connection lug, and in particular in the core of a railway track.

The invention also relates to a method of setting up such an insert.

It is known to press force into a bore of the web of a rail a tapered head pin provided with an externally threaded rod, the lug being held on said rod, for example by means of a nut.

We also imagined in the document DE-19847361 A1 a device in the form of an insert intended to be mounted in a calibrated hole of an element for fixing and electrically contacting an electrical connection lug, and which is constituted, on the one hand, by a ring electrically conductive having a sleeve which is integral with a flange and, secondly, by a screw which is provided with a rod intended to be introduced into the ring and a head facilitating its screwing and further allowing enclose the lug, between itself and the collar of the ring whose sleeve has been previously introduced into said hole of the element.

However, in such a device, the sleeve has longitudinal slots to form a plurality of contact flanges while the screw is screwed into a tapping of the collar particularly thick for this purpose and that an extension of the screw shaft allows obtain an elastic spacing of said wings.

This elastic deformation device has the particular disadvantage of a reduced electrical conduction of the sleeve in the calibrated hole due to the slots, even if we add, as described in this document, a contact piece reported in the calibrated hole.

For the same reasons, such a device does not provide a good seal, which leads to corrosion risks. These risks are a major problem for a device subjected to bad weather as is the case for the above application.

We also imagined an insert according to the document EP-0 507 259 A1 which advocates a plastic deformation of a ring by means of a frustoconical head of an ankle, said ring having a bore also frustoconical.

Due to the deformation of the material, the ring does not need to be split as in the previous case, hence the advantages of a good electrical contact and a good seal.

If such an insert is satisfactory, it nevertheless requires a fairly long implementation and sophisticated installation tooling.

This is why the inventors have come up with a new insert that is easy to install as in the document DE-19847361 A1 but effective electrically with good electrical conduction and a good seal as in the document EP-0 507 259 A1 .

The insert according to the invention comprises in the manner described above about the aforementioned document DE-19847361 A1 on the one hand, an electrically conductive ring having a sleeve which is integral with a flange and, on the other hand, a screw provided with a rod and a head, but which is particularly conspicuous in that the sleeve and collar of the ring have no slots and have a smooth inner surface and the screw is a self-tapping screw sized to be able to both tapping the inner surface of the sleeve of the ring while deforming by expanding the material constituent of said sleeve, the outer surface can thus be applied with force on the inner wall of the hole of the element.

The inventors have found a new application to a self-tapping screw which not only taps a conventional borehole as for example in the document DE-4404057 A1 but at the same time plastically deforms the ring, which can not do a conventional screw cooperating with a preformed thread.

In the document DE-4404057 A1 for example, the screw used elastically deforms a split piece by its frustoconical shape, while the use of a self-tapping screw in this device does not cause any additional deformation and it is recommended only to avoid in a conventional manner the formation preliminary tapping.

For example, between the lug and the head of the screw is interposed at least one washer.

To ensure a good electrical contact and a good fixing, the internal diameter of the sleeve of the ring has a value lower than that recommended by the manufacturer of the self-tapping screw for a conventional use thereof and in In particular, the inside diameter of the sleeve of the ring is less than said recommended dimension of about 10 to 15%.

It is known, for example for a self-tapping screw with a diameter of 10 mm ± 0.1 to provide, for conventional use in an object with a hardness of 40 to 50 da N / mm 2 , a drilling of 9, 3 mm ± 0.1.

Advantageously, the sleeve of the ring has an internal diameter which is less than the diameter of the self-tapping screw of about 16 to 22% and for example, the self-tapping screw has a diameter of about 10 mm ± 0.1 and the sleeve of the ring has an internal diameter of about 8.10 mm ± 0.1, while the hardness of the constituent material of the sleeve of the ring is in a range of about 20 to 30 da N / mm 2 . The inside diameter of the sleeve and the hardness of the latter are obviously chosen so that the force exerted by the self-tapping screw causes the desired outer diametric swelling of said sleeve.

-According to one embodiment, the inlet orifice of the ring on the side of its flange is chamfered to form an outward flare to ensure better guidance of the self-tapping screw and advantageously, the flange of the ring presents gripping means for a tool to facilitate its maintenance in rotation by said tool. -

Preferably, the self-tapping screw is of the multilobal type and in particular trilobal.

According to one embodiment, the inner surface of the sleeve of the ring is cylindrical, or at least partly slightly frustoconical.

In particular for fixing in a hole through the element, the sleeve of the ring is open at both ends.

In addition, the sleeve of the ring has a circular or polygonal outer section intended to cooperate with a hole of the element having a corresponding shape.

According to one embodiment, the self-tapping screw has a groove in the vicinity of its head, intended to house the terminal to be connected which is introduced on the shaft of the self-tapping screw by screwing by means of an internal thread whose lug is provided with this effect, or an internal thread made by the self-tapping screw itself.

The subject of the invention is also a privileged, but not compulsory, use of said insert, the latter being advantageously used for bringing it into electrical contact. a conductor connected to the lug with a rail track whose core is the element in which the insert is reported.

The invention furthermore also relates to a method of setting up such an insert which consists in:
  • positioning the ring of the insert by introducing its sleeve into the calibrated hole previously provided in the element to be equipped,
  • arrange the lug on the self-tapping screw, in particular by screwing,
  • tapping the inner surface of the sleeve of the ring by screwing the self-tapping screw while holding the ring in the hole of the element,
  • to deform by expansion the sleeve of the ring during its tapping,
  • ensure the electrical contact of the terminal by tightening the self-tapping screw whose head comes to grip said lug, directly or not, between itself and the collar of the ring.

The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows and which refers to the appended drawings in which:
  • the figure 1 represents in elevation an insert according to the invention, placed in the core of a railway,
  • the figure 2 is a section on II-II of the figure 1 (the section of the screw is not shown for clarity),
  • the Figures 3 to 6 show in section (the section of the screw is not shown for clarity) the successive phases of introduction of the insert in an element such as the soul of a railway track shown on the Figures 1 and 2 .

In the example shown on the Figures 1 and 2 , the insert according to the invention is disposed in the core of a track rail 1.

However, as already stated, it is clear that the insert according to the invention can be used in any other element or electrically conductive support (including carbon composites), provided with a calibrated hole 2 passing through the element. as in the example shown, or a blind hole.

As a result, in Figures 3 to 6 , we have taken over the reference 1 for the element which can be a part of the rail 1 of Figures 1 and 2 or another element.

In the figures, we can see an insert which is constituted, on the one hand, by an electrically conductive ring 3, made of copper or aluminum, for example, comprising a sleeve 3a integral with a flange 3b, the ring preferably being one piece and, secondly, by a screw 4 provided with a rod 4a and a head 4b and which will be discussed below.

The sleeve 3a has a smooth cylindrical inner surface and an outer section here circular (it could be polygonal).

The insert (3, 4) is intended to fix, by ensuring a good electrical contact, an electrical connection lug 5, itself connected in a known manner and not shown to a conductor or the like for a grounding for example.

In the example shown, the sleeve 3a is longer than the hole 2 of the rail 1 so that after being introduced into said hole, said sleeve protrudes slightly on the opposite side of the side by which it has been introduced. The diameters of the outside of the sleeve and the inside of the hole are of course adjusted with respect to each other.

Note also that in this example, the sleeve 3a is open at both ends and at its end facing the flange 3b, it has a chamfer 3c flared outwardly.

The screw 4 is of the self-tapping type or according to the names, self-forming and more particularly, of the trilobal type.

The diameter of the rod 4a of the screw 4 relative to the inside diameter of the sleeve 3a, as well as the material used to manufacture the ring 3 are chosen such that the self-tapping screw 4, when screwed into said ring, tap it while deforming (deformation of the material) so as to cause a swelling of its outer diameter.

Moreover, before the beginning of the screwing of the screw 4, as shown in FIG. figure 1 and in this embodiment, it takes advantage of the threading of said screw to set up the lug 5 which is either provided for this purpose with a conjugate internal thread, or advantageously consists of a suitable material and having a suitable inner diameter to be tapped by said screw 4 itself, while a groove 4c is provided under the head 4b of the screw to receive said lug 5 at the end of screwing, the latter being thus made virtually captive.

For example, the screw has a diameter of about 10 mm ± 0.1 and the sleeve has an inside diameter of about 8.10 mm ± 0.1 and more generally, the inside diameter of the sleeve is less than approximately 16 to 22% relative to the diameter of the self-tapping screw, which is about 10 to 15% less than the diameter recommended by the manufacturer of the self-tapping screw for conventional use.

Toujours à titre d'exemple, la dureté de la matière utilisée pour la bague est d'environ 20 à 30 da N/mm2.Still as an example, the hardness of the material used for the ring is about 20 to 30 da N / mm 2 .

The inventors have indeed found that by choosing the right diameters and the right material, one could tap and at the same time deform the ring.

From the figure 1 , which shows the beginning of the screwing of the screw 4 in the ring 3, facilitated at the beginning by the chamfer 3c of the ring which ensures a guiding of the screw, the screwing is continued and as shown by the Figures 4 and 5 , the ring is deformed gradually and inflates to come to apply forcefully on the inner wall of the hole 2 of the rail 1.

In addition, as and when this deformation obtained through the self-tapping screw, the thickness of the sleeve 3a decreases and at the end of screwing ( figure 6 ), when the rod 4a opens on the other side of the rail 1, it pushes the material of the ring outside axially and radially as shown well said figure 6 . In this way, it ensures a perfect conduction of the electrical connection thus made while strengthening the maintenance of the ring 3 in the hole 2.

To facilitate the maintenance of rotation of the ring 3 during the screwing of the screw 4, the flange 3b has on its periphery ridges or at least two cut faces or a polygonal shape so as to be held in rotation by a tool such as a flat key, knowing that as and when the progress of the screw, the tightening torque increases and the ring is quickly blocked without it being necessary to maintain it longer.

To ensure a close contact of the lug 5 on the flange 3b, a predefined tightening torque (for example 40 N / m) is applied, which can be easily obtained by means of a torque wrench.

In describing the insert according to the invention, it has at the same time described the implementation method as mentioned above and in the claims.

It is understood that such an insert can be placed in a simple manner, in a hole possibly blind, without the need to have access to both sides of the element, while ensuring excellent electrical contact and a reversible assembly of the screw in the ring. Moreover, a good resistance to vibration and loosening is obtained.

Many applications are possible outside of that described above by way of example and in particular in the field of the grounding and shielding of electrical or electronic boxes.
