It is a great concern that the situation of child labour in the coal mines of Meghalaya in general and Jaintia Hills in particular is quite pathetic. Almost all the child labourers engaged in the coalmines and coal depots are the migrant/trafficked children from the neighbouring states as well as Nepal and Bangladesh.

When survival is the main agenda for the majority especially of dalits, tribes, backwards and minorities, the country is running in a supra-highway, particularly in the fields of nuclear science and information technology. A handful of people are enjoying larger share at the cost of majority and the later does not have right even to shape their own life, the minority decides their fate.  Is it not the moral responsibility of the state to ensure food and shelter for its citizens? When the food stocks in Food Corporation godowns are rotting, why not the belly of the starved be filled with it? Does Right to Food not include in the Right to Life under Article 21? The failure of state in providing basic necessities to its citizens is a violation of Human Rights. And pity that the recent starvation deaths in Orissa are a man-made incidence because of state’s inaction and irresponsibility.

Children in the age group of 0-15 are affected by a killer disease known as Japanese Encephalitis. The virus was first detected in Japan so named after that. The disease was first detected in Gorakhpur (UP) in 1978 and till date neither centre nor state government is at all concerned.

Over the year Bt Cotton production has increased, increasing the engagement of child labour rampantly. NCPCR's effort to curb the menace of child labour in this sector and meeting with all stakeholders including the seed companies who enter into agreement with the farmers.
