This paper presents the results of research on selected mechanical and physical properties of pol... more This paper presents the results of research on selected mechanical and physical properties of polyethylene membranes containing 50% of the plant fraction obtained as waste from an edible oil press. The produced biomembranes were characterized by low tensile strength (2.02–4.28 MPa). The addition of plant material will not adversely affect the barrier properties such as water vapor permeability or the contact angle. Additionally, there was a discoloration of the characteristics affecting the shrinkage of the membrane. The presence of the plant component clearly lowered the shrinkage of the material. This research is important and provides valuable knowledge on the possibilities of using plant waste and the direction of the potential application of the materials produced with their use.

Comparison of selected properties of varnish coatings curing with the use of UV and UV-LED approa... more Comparison of selected properties of varnish coatings curing with the use of UV and UV-LED approach. The tests were made on samples of the coating of pine and beech wood using acrylic varnish curing classic method of UV and hybrid UV-LED method. For test coatings were determined thickness, hardness Bucholz, resistance to scratching, abrasion resistance, resistance to aggressive agents and resistance to UV radiation. Studies have shown that, in general there are no significant differences in the properties of the coatings curing using the method of UV and UV-LED. Coatings curing by UV-LED exhibited better resistance to abrasion.

Short combustion tube method was used for testing. Moisture content, density, loss of mass as well as time of combustion and incandescence burning were examined. The influence of wood density on its combustibility was also analyzed. The results obtained for African species were compared with Scots pine and European oak.

Industrially produced HDFs were subjected to heating or the boards have been covered with a layer... more Industrially produced HDFs were subjected to heating or the boards have been covered with a layer of vegetable oil, and then the boards were heated at 150o C for 1.5-2.5 h These operations aimed at increasing the tensile properties and reduce swelling to the extent that these boards may be used in wet conditions outdoors. Properties of produced boards were examined, which concluded that boards thermal treatment leads to a significant improvement of their properties (MOR and MOE increase and decrease of TS) and oil saturation of boards can be useful to reduce the swelling of boards.

Physical and mechanical properties and anatomy of metasequoia wood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides ... more Physical and mechanical properties and anatomy of metasequoia wood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu et Cheng). Metasequoia glyptostroboides is the only species of the metasequoia genus preserved to our day. It produces coarse wood with a very small share of late wood. This is a wood of evenly coloured heartwood and sapwood narrow zone. In its annual rings dominate thin tracheids of the early wood, what results in a low density. It also has a low shrinkage, but unfortunately also low strength parameters. Because of its rapid growth metasequoia has potential to be grown on plantations and be used for the production of wood-based materials.

The tests of wood combustibility have been conducted applying a short fire tube method. The basic criteria for combustibility assessment included a loss of mass, time of individual combustion and time of incandescence. The influence of the tested wood density on its combustibility has been analysed. The results achieved have been compared to two popular species of domestic wood: pine and oak.

The loss of mass and the time of individual combustion of wood tend to decrease together with the increase of density. There are some exceptions significantly deviating from the above rule among the tested species of wood from Africa. Some of them should be defined as hardly ignitable according to the adopted principles of classification. The following species of wood demonstrated the loss of mass below 20% and the time of combustion shorter than 60s: ekki (Lophira alata Banks ex Gaertn.f.), anakaraka (Cordyla madagascariensis R.Vig.), African mahogany (Khaya sp.), afzelia (Afzelia sp.), utile (Entandrophragma utile (Dawe & Sprague) Sprague) and iroko (Milicia sp.).
