El manisero
It is a cuban melody composed by Marion Sunshine, Rodrguez Moiss, Stanley
Kenton and L. Wolfe Gilbert around 1930. This version for a saxophone quartet was
written to be played with a Danzn rhythm at letter A and with Salsa at letter B. At
letter E, the alto saxophone can be replaced by the singing of the lyrics. Meanwhile, the
tenor saxophone could change the tumbao by playing the notes between the parenthesis
to harmonize the melody.
If the percussionist is used, he can sing the second voice at letter E. If so, the tenor
saxophone keeps its tumbao playing the notes that are not in the parenthesis.
Tumbaos are usually a repetitive two of four bar rhytmic vamp played by the piano,
bass or guitar and they must be played in relation to the clave. In this case, the tumbao
is played using two saxophones.
To interpret this melody, the player must know the importance of the clave rhythm, and
its effects on the rhythmic as well as melodic and harmonic aspects of the latin music.
In this tune the clave is 2-3. The clave pattern may not actually be played literally,
however, it must be implied within the melody.
