Holidays, Eclectorama Style!

This is going to be a quick post with just some teasers for the new year and an update or two, I am swamped this week at work, having fun with a cold and this limbo week between Christmas and New Years is always sort of weird. That all said I felt it would not be right if I just didn't share in some of my holiday cheer from this past week/weekend.

So first up I decided to bite the bullet and order this guy, I promise I will do a more detailed post on him in the coming weeks. This really isn't a Christmas present, it was more of an opportunity presented itself and I just took it and pressed the add to cart button. The Super 7 Stormtrooper arrived a couple days before Christmas , so my 2011 goals are off to a grand start.

Next was a quiet little Christmas Eve Dinner planned and prepared by my wife, those were the best potatoes I have ever had by the way.

Followed the next morning by an awesome breakfast, it's a tradition to have piggies in blankets and fruit salad on Christmas morning in our house, this year a new sausage roll and some home made pastries joined the festivities. No room left for lunch or dinner after these.

Then we watch "the girls", our two Bassets and one English Bulldog open their presents. Yes we get them presents. Lulu is quite good at opening presents, I think she enjoys this more than the toy inside. Then everyone else opens theirs.

Here we have my Christmas morning haul. I think I did pretty good. This year seemed to be a Star Wars themed Christmas! These were gifts from my wife and son, pure awesome. As long as I live there will always be a toy under the tree, period.

Next my good blogging buddy, James from A Piece of the Action sent me a little surprise. I guess little isn't a good word to describe it. What could it be?

WOW! it's a Empire Strikes Back Action Figure case! Wait it's a little heavy...

Holly Cow! That is right it is filled to the brim with Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back figures! This is another thing I am going to do a more detailed post about in the coming weeks as this was another one of my 2011 goals and this little blurb does not do it justice. I just wanted to make mention here so I could send out another thank you to James, I can't thank him enough.

So, I think I have had a pretty good Holiday so far for not taking anytime off from work and having a head cold. Sure I bought a few little things in the days leading up to Christmas and one at a sale afterwards, but that is all filler compared to all that Awesome stuff above. I hope everyone is having a great Holiday and I should be back and going with more in 2011!

Smugtrooper

Well look at this little trooper, finished his holiday shopping, presents all wrapped and possibly has checked one of his goals off the 2011 Collecting Goals list. I say possible because it is in route to the Eclectorama headquarters and I won't really believe it till it is in hand. More on this after the Holiday.

2010 Collecting Achievements and Goals

I was just checking out Doc Atomic's Attic of Astounding Artifacts as a usual start to my day. Oh and if you haven't checked out his new blog Galactic Awesome you are truly missing out on some great posts. I won't get into that here to much, but man I would love to see his entire Star Wars collection (I have a feeling we just might). So, anyway, Doc has taken an idea he has seen on the RebelScum boards and listed his Achievements and Goals, with the hopes others will do the same and also revisit them at the end of next year. This to me sounds way better than the budget driven goal I started in January, lets face it by March I was already tired of tracking my toy spending, I kept all my toy receipts, but plugging them into the spread sheet month after month was a drag. I still want to total my spending and see if I kept it under my goal. I have a feeling I didn't.

So I am throwing my hat into the ring for the Collecting Achievements and Goals for 2010, and hopefully more will join in. My goals are somewhat different than most, but if I learned anything from reading Doc's blog it is follow your heart when it comes to collecting. My cup of tea may not be everyone else's, and it's the diversity of the collecting world I think I find more fascinating than the actual collections.

That said here we go!

Collecting Achievements for 2010
The year brought about a change in the way I collect or see my collection. I have always been a little all over the board, you might say when it comes to collecting toys I am like a little like a puppy with a short attention span. I decided that it might be best to focus on a few things I really like and to that end started a process to purge my collection and re evaluate my current needs list. Okay, you might be thinking now "Purge, what? Were's the toys you scored or the grails you ended up with?" I had a few things I did pick up that I felt furthered my goal of a focused collection. I also will admit at times I went out of the range I was trying to stay within and that's going to happen. The real goal for me is to try to control the urge to just buy something for lack of something in focus. Like I said it's going to happen, but hopefully not as much.

Back to achievements. I made a good size dent in my storage of my collection and during the purge weeded out some items I really had no desire for. Started a process to better organize my collection and stated my focus, may still seem eclectic, but I narrowed it down to Star Wars Classic including vintage, my main focus is Stormtroopers and my "Original Modern Twelve", Star Trek I have been focusing on building a nice little Mr. Spock collection, DC Comics I think it's safe to say I have began to concentrate more on Batman and the Batmobile. Like I said a little slipping into the Marvel Universe and others will happen and I expected that. I finally made it to a San Diego Comic Con, it was a blast and ended up with a few pieces for my new focus. reducing my toy budget, while I may have gone over my resolution budget I set for myself, I feel I have cut my budget back, that's an achievement in my book. I have made a pretty good group of blogging buddies and am thankful there are other "Toy Junkies" out there. Last I was actually invited to participate in a group art show about the love of toys. Now, my toy highlights.

Star Wars
The Gentle Giant Large Scale Vintage Style Stormtrooper, The new Rocket Firing Boba Fett (I know big deal), A Lego X-Wing (While not scarce, it seemed hard to find for a while), Concept Chewbacca and Concept Vader figures from 2007 (Another meh, but it was a big deal for me to finally get these), the new ESB Boba Fett (never thought I would see this on the pegs). Oh and my rediscovered love for Vintage Star Wars (see my goals).

Star Trek
Vintage Mego Star Trek The Motion Picture Mr. Spock (Carded), Playmates Toys Assorted Spock Figures for holes in the Spock collection (Thanks James), and a Playmates Toys Transporter Series Mr. Spock.

DC Comics
Mego Pocket Super Heroes Batman (hee hee), Retro Action Superman (and Batman, Aquaman, Green Lantern... okay these may be meh as well, still cool by me), an open version of the BTAS Batcycle.

Miscellaneous
Vintage Mego Hulk (Rrrraaaaaaargh)

Collecting Goals for 2011
I am going to buy one of those freaking huge Super7 Stormtroopers, I don't care if it's not sensible and what others may think. I am getting one of those. Now that that's out of the way... I also want to continue to re define my space where I house my collection, continue to organize and purge where necessary, to continue to build friends in the hobby, hopefully to continue to design stuff people will want in their collections, and finally my more specifics:

Rebuild my loose Vintage "12" Star Wars collection starting with a complete Small Head Han Solo • A working vintage R2-D2 • a vintage original bow caster for my Chewbacca • Vintage Ertl Mr. Spock • 9" Playmates Toys Amok Time Spock • Regular Size Stormtrooper Mighty Muggs • Vintage Death Star Playset (at least a start to one) • Vintage 12" Stormtrooper • The Flash Retro Action Figure • A good start to building a loose vintage Star Wars figure collection through the Empire Strikes Back figures.

Like Doc said "Will it happen?" Man I hope so! My goals may seem small, but I think they may be obtainable. I am looking forward to 2011 being a rewarding and challenging year as far as my collection goes, lets see if I can stick with the goals and a little less of the off track spending.

Join the fun here!

Spock Stop 16: Martinsville, Indiana

Spock is off and going again, knock on wood, and here is a report form his first stop after being out of action for what seems like forever. This should be Spock's 17th stop, but I am still waiting on some photos from his extended stay so I just kept it easy an picked up where we left off.

So I will turn it over now to Brian B of What My Dad Saw and the Indiana branch of Under the Giant Penny, take it away Brian!

Megan feeding Spock some pumpkin pie on thanksgiving day.

One bite was not enough so he claimed a whole pie for himself.

After dinner Spock hung out on the couch with our "Bat-Cat".

Another day another Thanksgiving dinner. Spock found some friends to
hang with at this Thanksgiving feast.

At Saturdays dinner Spock hung out at the house which is much of the
focus of "What My Dad Saw". He didn't believe that we had our pet
bird, Mork, still in the freezer since the blizzard of 1978. He
believes now.Back story and video of Mork found here

Spock also went and saw the worlds largest Christmas tree. It
actually is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument located in the circle
in downtown Indianapolis.

Spock found a fellow Vulcan with pointy ears.

Spock visited the World War Memorial.

Spock really enjoyed his visit at Under The Giant Penny's Indiana
branch.

Before leaving Spock toured Faulkenberg Printing company.

Spock stopping by Indiana on his "Spockation".
The video shows him visiting What My Dad Saw, Under The Giant Penny
and Faulkenberg Printing Company.

Spock beaming to his next location.

We wish he could have visited longer but he was anxious to continue
his tour of America. Thanks for coming Spock!
Brian B

Thanks again Brian for hosting Spock and showing him a great time, plus sharing your Thanksgiving feast with him. Spock's next stop is Chicago, that reminds me, time to see if he has moved on to the stop after that. Tune back in and remember, Live long and prosper.

Star Wars state of mind

Maybe it's the time of year or just having some of my collection displayed in the office and easily accessible, but I have been thinking about that galaxy far, far away a lot more recently. Believe it or not at one time Star Wars was my only collecting focus. In 1997 I had about six of those standard six foot shelving units packed to the brim with nothing but Star Wars. Of the one shelf that contained books it was all Star Wars. That was probably what I called my hey day of collecting. I have since carved that collection down, focusing more on the original trilogy, more specifically Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.

I can't say I have a ton of vintage stuff, or even the high end stuff. I never really went after vintage holy grails or for that matter gone back and retraced my childhood for those items I never had. I mostly just now collect what I like, but have been feeling a little more vintage coming on, mainly the odd loose vintage figure here or there. I think I am also at a place where I enjoy some of the toys other's would think are pure trash, I'm looking at you 1995 Power of the Force buff Han and Luke. I'm not saying I am ready to chunk everything and go whole hog Star Wars again, just it's nice to revisit that time back in 1977 and 1978 were we only had our imagination and no clue what was on the horizon for the Star Warriors. Enough rambling like an old man...

Batman: 106

or To the Victor Goes the Spoils, Part 2...

I have been so busy lately, so much so I have neglected to post a little prize that came in the mail a few weeks back. Wow, weeks, were does the time go? You may remember the Battle for the Cowl between Reis of Hey! Look at My Toys and I, part of the deal was a piece of artwork, check and a Batman from the losing parties collection, check. Here is Batman number 106, none other than a Mego Pocket Super Heroes Batman, front and center of the Batman shelf.

Of course when the package came Bat Hound intercepted it and upon investigating the contents thought Reis had sent her a chew toy, after some clever negotiation on my part with a Bat Hound Snack I was able to secure the Batman and get it on the shelf without any Bat Hound slobber. Thanks again Reis, anytime you want to lose more toys, just let me know ; )

Spock Stop 16: A Teaser

This just came in from Brian B, Spock is safe and sound and getting ready to enjoy some Thanksgiving Festivities. Spock says he is thankful his last host is feeling better and that he is once again able to enjoy his Spockcation.

Looks like he already making friends, more next week!

Miss Me?

After close to seven months of being missing in action, I have confirmation that Spock is indeed on the road again. Some may have thought this was an elaborate hoax, but it is all true. Spock's last host fell ill and was recovering, so Spock sat patiently by his side until he was well enough to send him on. I am told that as soon as he is able I will get some photos from this extended stop, but until then we will all have to wait patiently for photos from Brian B of What My Dad Saw and Under the Giant Penny, as Spock has stopped by his house for Thanksgiving and a check up.

I think I may need to revamp the rules a bit on Spockcation and limit him to a week lay over at each stop. I also need to thank all my new readers that want to participate, but I have already closed Spock's itinerary down a year or so ago and he is booked up, but thanks for volunteering and feel free to join in on the comments from his travel posts.

Since tomorrow is Turkey Day and I will no doubt be stuffed and sleepy I will return on Friday with a Candid Toy Pic and hopefully I will have some time to shoot some toy pics for next week. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, Live Long and Prosper.

Spockcation News!

My last post for Spockcation may have been premature...

As a friend of mine recently said "It's hard to keep Spock down!" There have been some developments over the weekend, please stay tuned as more develops.

Candid Toy Pics

I have always wanted to try more of this and decided that on Fridays I will try and post a candid toy pic. Be warned I may not get to it every Friday, but I will try. I laid down a few rules for myself on these.

1) Phoning it in, meaning I am going to shoot them with the phone. That drawing desk picture last Saturday was a phone pic, I thought it turned out pretty good, they may not always turn out that way.

2) Limited to no explanation. I have always liked photos people have shot of their collections just hanging out on shelves or or wherever. I especially like when you don't know what or where that toy is from and you either have to ask or track them down online.

3) Captions, sometimes yes, sometimes no.

4) Very Limited to no set ups. That drawing desk image was really what was happening on the desk at the time, with the exception of the wrestler playing with the micro machines Slave I. I sometimes pose the toys and walk off and leave them and then come back and laugh, so I thought that would be the only posing, nothing shot specific.

5) Photoshop only to reduce the image size to my blog "standard" no cropping, though I may have cropped the desk party... okay no cropping from here on out.

So without explanation (except for above, I have to start somewhere), no caption this time, no set up, Photoshop to reduce and phoning it in...

Aloha Spockcation

I guess I should go ahead and make this announcement, but my vacationing Spock is gone. I have been putting off any mention in hopes he would turn up, but alas it is not to be. So, with a heavy heart I am announcing the close of Spockcation.

Now I know some of my readers who have signed up to host are probably bummed out about this and maybe had some awesome plans to take Spock to their place of business or their favorite place to hang out. Rest assured I have a plan so that everyone that signed up will have a chance to join in on the fun. So, give me a little time to get things together here and I will be making another announcement soon as to what to expect from the end of Spock's awesome vacation.

To those who stepped up ready to send me a Spock to replace my vacationing Spock, thanks again for your thoughts. I really do appreciate it, but I think everyone will be happy with the way I have chosen to go with this event.

Thanks again I hope all who came to eclectorama for Spockcation will stick around.

To the victor goes the spoils... part 1

You may remember a little blog contest I liked to call THE BATTLE FOR THE COWL!
Well, the prizes are starting to roll in. Part of the agreement was the loser was to draw the winner an original Batman piece of fine artwork suitable for framing declaring the victor the king of Batman figures... as well as send a Batman from their collection.

To borrow form Reis, click this bad boy to BIF! BANG! POW! size it.

This, my friends, is the totally awesome piece of Bat Art that Reis has just sent over my way and I am freaking out. How cool is this that not only am I getting Batman, but the Bat Family and some of his more notorious villains! This is so awesome it totally trumps the post I was going to post today. The bonus is I am also getting a high resolution version I can have printed and framed for my freaking office!

So, Reis you are indeed a good sport and an all around great bloggie friend, I tip my cowl to you, and you dear reader if you haven't already done so, go now to Reis' art blog or toy blog and follow this magnificent nerdy bastard! I say this in the upmost respect... notice I didn't use the word Geek!

Something a little different

I debated posting this drawing, but after I thought about it I figured why not. It's not your typical Super Hero, Space Going, Robot Stompin' sort of character you are used to seeing from me here, but it's a drawing style I do miss doing. I guess I should say it's the "generic" content that I miss doing from time to time.

As I was cleaning out some file drawers at work I came across this unfinished drawing in a stack of thumbnails and sketches. Unfinished because it never made it past the point of being inked. It was for a little specialty toy division of our company we were thinking about launching back in 2005. Some of the product was to be little puppies in purses and this was to be used on the packaging. The powers that be decided to go in another direction and this concept was scrapped at this stage.

It's sort of funny because I could totally see my wife trying this with our Bulldog... the purse would have to be a lot bigger though.

Wee Little Batmobiles

Over a year ago on the Under the Giant Penny blog there was this post I made a comment on about having the whole set of Microverse Batmobiles loose and I would shoot some pictures for Brian B so he could see all the Batmobiles in the set.

Well, I found all my Batmobiles! Funny what you turn up when you are unpacking Batman toys.

Anyway, this is the set that Hasbro released back in the the nineties. Seemed like sort of an answer to the Galloob Micro Machines, who later Hasbro ended up buying. Like Brian's post on UTGP, they are supper small and the only action besides the wheels is each has a opening canopy with a little wee Batman inside.

Though mine didn't have Adam West... weird. There you go Brian, better late than never!

Battle for the Cowl: Epilogue

Well, in celebration of last Friday's victory I decided to don my Batman T-Shirt for work today. I also just wanted to thank all the readers and followers for enthusiastically keeping up with the competition and thank Reis for giving me a challenge. Reis is really a good sport and all around awesome blogger. If you haven't checked out his blogs on art and toys you need to make it a usual stop in your surfing.

The shirt was just the last of the celebrating, Friday was Chili night and a night off so I added the extras back to the shelf and made a spot for my new Batman, number 106, who's on his way. Saturday we had a viewing of that classic from 1989, Batman staring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Kim Basinger. Sunday, Halloween, Bat Hound dropped by to help hand out candy with Lulu and Gertie, who decided to dress as Sugar and Spice respectively.

Never fear! There will be more Bat Hound in Eclectorama's Future!

Finally, hopefully this week I will pick up a little reward for myself to either add to the loose Batman collection or some other part of the Batman Collection. Stay tuned for that in a future post. Also as work gets busier I will try to get some posts I have been planning up and make some announcements on Spockcation and something else Reis and I have brewing, so thanks in advance for being patient.

Battle for the Cowl: Batman Collection Reveal!

The day has finally arrived to unveil our Batman collections, here's my shelf of Batman in all its glory! My lovely wife let me use a couple of her Halloween Bats to decorate with on either side, thanks again.

So, on the shelf I have 101 Batman plus an additional 3 of plush I keep in the collection AND my late find from yesterday, he's at the end of the post and now on the shelf, giving me a grand total of 105 Different Batmans (or is that Batmen). I will note I could have slammed Reis in the plush area of the competition as I have access to countless variations of plush Batman items.

Also since I am writing this before the big reveal, and have no idea how many Batman items Reis has, I just want to add this was a fun little contest and brought back a lot of memories of why I collect certain things. It made me realize I have a crap load of batman toys and what not. It made me miss some I had given away or sold off, but still I have the memories. Oh, and it made me hope I thoroughly trounced Reis and his Batman Collection : )

Let's take a look at Hey! Look at my Toys! collection shall we?
