Collapse all
|Dr. Chris Hartig was raised by a Vietnam Veteran Marine who taught him that “you must put in the work to get the results,” and a mother who gave him the values to “do the right thing, especially when it seems like a hard choice.” He is ready to put in the work as the Democratic candidate for Indiana House Representative, District 29 (Noblesville and part of Fishers). Dr. Hartig worked 15 years in the mortgage and finance industry and spent the last decade as a Management and Leadership professor at WGU Indiana, supporting working Hoosiers to upskill to earn training and certifications to improve their lives. He earned a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership from Northcentral University, an MBA in Management and Strategy from Western Governors University, and a BA in Economics from Ball State University. His legislative priorities are to serve as a guardrail against the unchecked extreme supermajority, protect personal freedoms, and support public schools.
- Guardrail against an extreme supermajority Hoosiers have lived under an unchecked supermajority for too long, and it has led to extreme and unpopular laws. I will focus on solutions that matter to Hoosiers, and guardrail against restrictions on personal freedoms.
- Protect personal freedoms I will work to defeat and amend the copycat template legislation from other states and special interest groups that threatens the rights of the majority of citizens in our state, and bring back common sense, compassion, and empathy to our state government.
- Support our public schools As a member of the Indiana legislature, I'll work to increase the number of trained counselors in schools, bring universal pre-k to our students, transparency in communication, improve teacher pay, and create an inclusive and safe environment for all children.
The political environment has lost humanity in discourse. The fabricated social issues and catchphrases without meaning are creating a divide where people are marginalized over their differences. I want Indiana to return to its roots of hometown hospitality. By being a welcoming place to live and work, our state can attract and retain our graduates and innovative industry as well.
The fictional character who I have the most admiration for is Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings. Sam is steadfast and loyal to Frodo as a friend and shows heroic strength in the journey.
The reaction of Democratic voters thanking me for running as a voice underrepresented in Indiana motivates me. I have been told that I am brave to run as a Democrat educator in Indiana, but I understand what I am representing and why this is important. Feeling the appreciation from community conversations, and even the offer to have some snacks and cookies while out canvassing, impacts me greatly. I am thankful for all the support.
I agree with Dr Jennifer McCormick that a state ballot could correct unpopular legislation. Indiana would benefit from a state ballot initiative to give voters direct input on extreme legislation brought by the majority party that does not represent the majority of voters.
