Chapter 4

“A Leafeon, eh?”

“Leavee-vee!”

“Isn’t he cool? He’s from the Eevee Evolution Lab! They said I could take care of him because you’ve done such a good job looking after Eevee, Chloe! It must be in our DNA!”

“Our DNA?” Chloe laughed doubtfully with a sweatdrop hanging over her head. “I don’t think Cerise DNA’s got anything to do with it…If it did, I wouldn’t be the first in our family with an Eevee, Parker.”

My first Pokémon!” Parker danced Leafeon around happily on his hind legs by the paws, too thrilled to remain still. “And he’s already evolved! This is the hugest thing that’s ever happened to me! I gotta tell Goh! I gotta tell Ash and Jinny! I gotta tell everyone! MOM! Can I use the phone?”

It was hard not to get scooped up in her brother’s pep. The exuberance whirling around him, you’d think he taught Leafeon Leaf Storm!

“Before that, you might want to remember a pivotal rule of raising Pokémon, Parker.”

“A pivotal rule? What’s that, Chloe?”

“Attending to your Pokémon’s needs.” Chloe pointed up to the ceiling with her pointer finger. “It’s almost lunchtime! And you know what that means!”

He was about to tease her she looked and sounded like Goh saying so, but restrained himself since it was almost lunchtime.

“Hey yeah! I have it covered! Leafeon! Eevee! Yamper! Come on over! Yeardley, you can call your Pokémon out too! I’ll be back with enough Pokémon food for all of them!” Parker proceeded to slip on his slippers and crash through the kitchen, creating a lot of noise emptying the empty pots and pans on the floor. Not as much noise as when Ash and Pikachu supercharged the electricity and all the appliances in their home, but still a lot!

Tripping was a minor setback. One slipper short, Parker scurried onto his socked foot, grabbing the door handles to the upper cabinets of the fridge and sliding down them back onto the floor at the base of the fridge.

“Parker, do you need to be so dramatic?”

“No. But it’s more fun.”

Chloe sighed. And he claimed she was turning into Goh?

Parker reordered the mess, emerging from behind the counter with bowls for Leafeon, Eevee, Yamper, Cubchoo, and Crabominable. They were overfilled, the food stacked in piles like six Falinks standing in a vertical line, one on top of the other, not that he received complaints.

He, his sister, and Yeardley found their seats at the table, Talia serving the tea and the bread. Professor Cerise arrived once he put his paper down, and the five of them and the five Pokémon ate.

Stories were traded across the table, of what Chloe had been up to, of why Yeardley was peppered with bandages, and Parker’s dream journey with Leafeon.

“Do you have a dream for the future?”

That –

That was forever the question.
