Like everything about Roman, things sharpen when he comes into view: his voice cuts clear through her mind, the quiet, tentative way he’d say what's in the text, if he were here. The cold, decisive way he must have flagged the bartender down. She imagines him snapping the pic hastily, typing quickly. A glutton for punishment; egging on another rejection to close out his day. It’s nearly 6. She’ll be able to get out of work soon. Not that she’s going, but if she were…
Gerri stops. She looks up. The boys have left the board room and are dispersing. She’s, technically, not needed anymore. She hardly works for Waystar, certainly doesn’t work for GoJo. Karolina catches her gaze, raises a brow, just as Tom cuts around Oskar and heads her way.
She stuffs her phone in her pocket, shame and- and that slightly unhinged feeling Roman always claws out of her, coursing through her veins.-

Summary
Roman stiffens, as if he's bracing himself against the door. She wonders if the child lock is on.
"I'm, fucking-" he says, swallowing around his words. She waits for him to say more, something biting or bitter, but he doesn't say anything.
"Mad the president won't be your new daddy?" She says, a blunt edge to her words. A bit colder than she'd intended. Roman isn't looking at her as she says it.
It cools the air immediately. She wishes she regretted saying it, it'd be easier that way.
It's as if she watches it in slow-motion. His face crumples in a few pieces; his lip quivers, and he ducks his chin down to his chest. He balls a hand up, then puts it to his split lip. His brows furrow in, and theres a sunken quality to him. He mewls, like a little kid. A baby. She's only ever seen him cry today, and as a child. Well- as a young teenager. Roman cried into high school, but he was always so gummy and thin, he never looked like a grown man until he hit his late 20s. He looks like a kicked puppy. -

"I'm gonna-" James starts, turning around on the ledge. "I'm gonna say something, and you've gotta tell me if I'm being a tosser, 'kay?"
"You know I will." Remus chuckles. He can't summon the strength to look at James, preparing to be run raw by another one of James' quirks. He's too kind, their Jamie, too caring, too boldly emotional. It's going to be the death of them all, Remus is sure of it.
"If I could, Moony, I'd move all of us out to the country today and cast a vanishing charm." James' voice wavers, falling on Remus' ears softly; no longer straining his headache. "It's so fucking scary. You should see the Auror office- we're in shambles."
Remus picks his head up, and catches James' hand darting away from under his glasses. His heart breaks, just as he knew it would, and he reaches out for Prongs' hand.
"If I could I'd take us, and Lily, and Marly and Dorcas and Mary- and everybody's families and hide," James' voice breaks, and Remus squeezes his hand. His high has forgotten him, amidst the emotion. "God, I'm such a coward. But I'd do it."
"Why can't you?"-
In the year after Hogwarts, and before the turn of the decade, Remus desperately wishes he could run away.
