    What kind of illithid colony chose not to cull an illithid as outrageously aberrant as the Emperor? How did it relearn the secret to building nautiloids, long-lost technology from the age of illithid dominion? Who was the Absolute, before it was the Absolute?

    Tav remembers. They are one of the last thralls of the original colony, from before the madness seized the brain. Soon, they will be reborn as another nameless illithid, another cog in a senseless machine, no past, no present, no future. But then the voice of the Absolute falls silent. The nautiloid crashes. And Tav remembers what was lost.

    “I see it.” She rubbed her cheek against his, her tail curling around his hunched shoulders.

    “It means hope, Gale. It means something real.”

    Gale is a divination wizard, but a mere shadow of his former glory.

    Aoife is an Oath of the Ancients paladin, haunted by the grief of her past.

    After a fateful meeting a year ago Aoife's path crosses the Wizard of Waterdeep's once more. But as they are drawn together Gale's misfortune with the orb and Aoife's long-held sorrow aren't the only dark shadows cast upon them by the past. And soon their fates become as entangled as the threads of the Weave.

    This is a retelling of the main game narrative along with a *lot* of new plot. Now revised and extended!

    This is how it begins:

    "Ansur! I mean you no harm! I wish only to make an offer. Hear it, this is all I ask; turn me away, strike me down, if it bears no interest to you!"

    The storm did not die, no, but it lost its fury, its warning edge, that which bade them turn back. That shadow in the sky which sparked, sometimes, with distant lightning—it descended in swooping hooks that cut the air so cleanly, so quietly, it was almost a surprise, despite his close observation, when Balduran found Ansur before him.

    He reached his hand out, bridging half the gap, supplicant, unarmed, honest.

    Ansur hesitated for only a moment. Then, with a twist and flap of his powerful wings; with a manœuvring of his muscular neck, he pressed his crest against Balduran’s palm.

    And right there, in that instant: the eye of the storm.

    You think, of course, that you know how it ends, and in a way, you are correct. That is how it ends, sometimes. This time, however, Ansur sees it happen—yes, he foresees it all—just as his Balduran arrives at Moonrise Towers, underprotected, unprepared.

    This is the story of how they survive.

That all changes thanks to a sudden reunion with his fellow wizard and former adventuring companion, who has gone through a dramatic life change herself... Surely after a year, Gale has had enough time to get over his unrequited love for the woman who'd turned him down, especially when she's now become a mind flayer. Right?

    Or: postgame Gale x f!Tav, slightly slow burn get together, with a pining Gale, a definitely not generic Tav, and a second chance after missing out on the game's canon romance. And tentacles!
