Marynarze, w przeciwieństwie do ludzi lądu, mieli nieco więcej szacunku do Przeklętego Kapitana, o którym legendy opowiadano już małym dzieciom. Podobno dawno temu, gdy cztery kraje nie były jeszcze sprzymierzone, a Pik, Kier, Karo i Trefl toczyły ze sobą nieustanne wojny, pojawił się potężny, piąty król, który rzucił im wszystkim wyzwanie. Zmusił cztery nacje do zawiązania sojuszu przeciwko niemu i wygnaniu go na morze. Mówiono, że nie był człowiekiem, że miał siną twarz i puste oczodoły jak u trupiej czaszki. Niektórzy twierdzili, że to on zabrania Czwórprzymierzu szukać odległych lądów za karę, że odrzucili jego władzę. Inni twierdzili, że broni Czwórprzymierza przed zagrożeniem, które miało nadejść z zewnątrz. Niektórym wydawało się też, że jest efektem zbyt bliskiej relacji marynarzy i Dzikiego Ognia, ale dla ludzi pracujących w morzu był jak najbardziej realny - nikt, zwłaszcza na niespokojnych wodach, nie śmiał wątpić w jego istnienie.
