“You are the prince.”
At the moment of coronation, things become entangled. A thorn pressed into the hand of Hythlodaeus VI seven years ago changes the course of their history when a homunculus king and an honorable prince become linked by a single heart. To abandon him would be cowardice. Briar is no coward. He may not be able to be king, but his life can be used to bring about an era of prosperity and change. And to save the Elda he loves.
"I am the prince."
But Wilhelm rejects this sacrifice, rejects his ideals, and cuts their lives together. He has sworn to save this world with the prince, and he will not break this vow. Whatever the consequences of such a betrayal, he can face them as long as Briar lives. He will prove that his life has always been worth living and that he is so much more than his curse.

A Seeker and An Observer, souls woven together. To truly claim the throne, they must clarify the past, confront the present, and forge the future. But all things are far more complex than either could imagine, especially when one royal becomes two and a parent's loving intentions spell disaster as always.

Briar wonders where the prince is as he settles into what will likely be his gilded grave, the royal chambers. What kind of man will he be? What kind of king? The faith they all have in a mere boy Briar’s age…is this the same deification that drove those villagers to tear a child apart?
Ah, but you misunderstand. Briar’s slaughter is noble. It is for a good cause. It is for prosperity and safety, and change. It is selfless. It is kind. "Briar has heard him cry many times before. The only senses he retained while comatose were hearing and the embrace of pain – because those who cursed him are such vindictive dogs. Will would read to him during what he assumes was the night. He would give surface level reviews of the books in the library in the way only a child who barely learned his letters could. Recount his days from a journal. Cry and beg him to wake up again, for the roses were in bloom, and he is too scared of thorns to reach for them. His voice changed, his understanding grew stronger, the stories grew to where he could no longer finish them in one night, his sorrow deeper, his days more complex, his weeping more agonized as he swore his life to freeing Briar from his curse. Vows of undying affection whispered as if they were prayers that could raise him from the dead.
“I love you. Please wake up. I love you, please; I know that now, Briar. Please just come back to me.” Chanted ad infinitum with tears as their catalyst."
