Shadow ripped through the blast doors with ease, Air Shoes flaring to life as he sped towards the sounds of battle. No matter who it was, he would defeat them. They would rue the day they even entertained the idea of facing the Ultimate Lifeform—
“Oh, hey, Shadow! Long time no see!”
“...Sonic?”
The blue hedgehog dusted invisible dirt off his arms, grinning like the sun that Shadow hadn’t seen in a while (they were in a subterranean base, after all). “Huh, you remembered me!”

After defeating Black Doom, Shadow awaits his execution in the bowels of the G.U.N. fortress. An unexpected intruder, however, throws a wrench into his plans to atone for his sins.
Basically a what-if scenario of the Semi-Hero path's Hero ending from Shadow the Hedgehog (2005).

On top of that, the Commander of G.U.N seems to be losing a grasp on what really matters and Shadow discovers the military may be more connected to his past than he ever realised.
Sonic's saved the world multiple times, with the help of his friends. But protecting the world from harm becomes a whole lot harder to do when the military's against you.
And Knuckles knows, his best friend might just be the one they were all warned to save.
Good thing Sonic's not known for being incredibly stubborn.

But stars aren't supposed to glow in daylight, or be spiky, or send out blasts of Chaos energy while fighting titans in the sky.

He tries to muster a smile while wiping away his tears, but Sonic's face makes it drop into more of a grimace. Sonic just looks so lost, like he doesn't know what to do, but Sonic always knows what to do. This must be Tails' fault then. Unpredictable emotions getting the better of the hedgehog makes sense, but it looks like so much more than that. Sonic looks like Tails just grew a second head, like he doesn't know what or who he's looking at. He honestly looks kinda... Scared?
