Ophelia turned slowly back to Horatio and watched his face for an explanation. The analog clock on the wall maliciously slowed down as he met her gaze. The second hand ticked- hours passed- the second hand ticked again. Dawn ought to have broken by the time a knock sounded at the door.
After the tragic events at the Danish court, Horatio and Ophelia move into a cottage in the woods with the hopes of living out the rest of their lives in relative obscurity. Elsinore’s staff isn't going to make that easy.
Or: A big, dark Hamlet AU with some cozy cottagecore frosting on top. Expect political intrigue, decade-spanning flashbacks, and the slow realization that Hamlet was a horrible person. -

He should have found solice in the belief that his sweet prince could never feel the same way as he did. How did it not burn him alive, knowing that the man to whom he'd dedicated the better part of his adulthood, the man he adored, who could theoretically love him just as hopelessly, did not? Horatio should have felt like weeping and rending his garments. And perhaps soon he would. But right then, the prince’s trembling words were everything he needed.
No matter how hard he tries to comfort Hamlet, Horatio can't help but worry that he's doing something wrong. It's hard to be a friend to somebody you're so in love with.

As the title suggests this is a modern line by line rewrite of Hamlet. Differences include modern English, the are in the Northeast instead of Denmark, instead of being king the fight is to be president of the family company. Also I made Hamlet and Horatio canon because why not? Each chapter is an act and I plan on updated every few days so the upload won't take long.
