Summary
Outside the inn where they were staying, a fennec fox started barking. The sound was echoing in Malcolm’s ears when he startled awake.
Leandra mumbled, and blinked her dark brown eyes open, her pupils were blown wide as they adjusted to the gloom. She frowned as she took in his expression, “what’s wrong, Malcolm, love?”
“What if,” Malcolm swallowed hard, Malcolm splayed his palm against the curve of her belly and was sure that he was imagining how his fingers felt warm. He felt his chest tighten, full of hope, fear, and too many emotions to name, all rolled into one expanding cloud which filled up all the space between his ribs. “What if the baby is a mage?”
