When Malcolm succumbs at last to a terminal illness, Leandra Hawke checks out. At nineteen years old, Kaycee is left to keep her family afloat on her own. To cope with Bethany’s fears and the louts pawing at her in the pub where she works to make ends meet, to handle Carver’s growing belligerence and the long nights he spends drinking and gambling with less-than-ideal companions. To somehow respond to all the people in the village who now call her “Mistress Hawke” with her mother still alive. Kaycee looks back and remembers how her world fell apart.

Leandra mumbled, and blinked her dark brown eyes open, her pupils were blown wide as they adjusted to the gloom. She frowned as she took in his expression, “what’s wrong, Malcolm, love?”
“What if,” Malcolm swallowed hard, Malcolm splayed his palm against the curve of her belly and was sure that he was imagining how his fingers felt warm. He felt his chest tighten, full of hope, fear, and too many emotions to name, all rolled into one expanding cloud which filled up all the space between his ribs. “What if the baby is a mage?”
