There’s something in the way that she says it that catches Holm’s attention, his relaxed expression twisting into a silent acceptance. He shakes his head, turning his head away.
“The elves’ll arrest you for whatever you’re planning,” he casually mentions, “They found me and my research, and they held me in their prison for a good decade or so.”
Marcille sighs, letting go of Falin to get to her feet. “It’s worth it. I don’t care what the elves in the West think, I’m going to do what’s necessary."

Holm had heard a lot about Laios' room, back when Kabru told him everything about the development of their relationship. According to him, it was the single most interesting room he'd ever seen in his life, full of personality, a treasure trove of merchandise. Though Holm took Kabru's description with a grain of salt – it was clear that, in his mind, everything about Laios had become something of unmatched beauty and fascination – he still couldn't help but be curious about it. Kabru's flattery, he reasoned, may have been exaggerated, but it couldn't have been entirely unearned. After all, while Laios himself didn't seem remarkable at a glance, he turned out to be every bit as talented and eccentric as one could have expected from Kabru's description of him. It only made sense that his personality would rub off on his room in one way or another.

“It’s a good thing I stopped you from pouring that water out,” Holm murmurs to Marcille, who’s watching in pure befuddlement, “because it would have likely made passage through here much harder.”
As he says this, the water ripples in the center of the room. Kabru reaches for his sword, but Falin rather suddenly places a hand on his shoulder.
He furrows his brows, looking at her, but she isn’t even looking at him. Instead, she’s watching the water.
“If it’s an undine,” she whispers to him, “then your sword wouldn’t do anything. Don’t waste your time taking out your weapon.”

Laios continued to fill his sketchbook with drawings of Marillier as she floated listlessly around the tank. He wasn't sure how good his grasp of her anatomy was, but it definitely got easier to draw her over time. "You really are a good artist," Holm said, looking over his shoulder. Usually, Laios would be bothered by that kind of thing, but he wanted Holm to see the drawings anyway. That was why he didn't cover them up. He scooted over to make space for Holm to sit down beside him. "I'm so happy to see so many sketches of my girl," Holm added, lips curling into a catlike smile.
"Thanks. For some reason, it doesn't look right to me," Laios said, knitting his eyebrows as he narrowed his eyes at the page. "Like there's something wrong with it. But if you like them, then I guess that's good enough. When I'm done," he offered, trying to make the body seem transparent, "I'll give all of them to you, so you can pick the best ones to display."

“I didn’t even say anything!” she protests, clutching her mace a bit tighter.
Rather than answer, he points at her, shaking his head with a grave look on his face. “You didn’t need to say anything. I know that look on your face. You were thinking about it.”

Holm's body instinctively went stiff as the door opened, revealing two pairs of identical golden eyes staring directly at him with unabashed curiosity. His first impulse was to drop his bag and run, but, as was usually the case when he was overwhelmed, he froze completely, unable to move or say a single word. Time seemed to have frozen along with him as the siblings stood in the doorway, the sister in the front with her hand on the doorknob, and the brother stood behind her, looking over her shoulder, neither of them saying a word. Just when it seemed like they were going to stand there for the rest of time, staring at each other in silence, Laios' face lit up with recognition.
“Ah, Kabru's friend from the aquarium!” He already forgot Holm's name... “How's Marillier and the girls?” he asked in a friendly tone, smiling down at Holm. Of course, that is what he remembered.
“They're doing fantastic, thank you,” Holm said, smiling softly. “I'll let them know you asked about them.”

The door opened suddenly, interrupting his miserable train of thought, and he came face to face with an honest-to-god dragon. Not the papier mache model Falin showed him last week, but something even bigger and capable of moving on its own. Golden eyes looked at him from inside the costume, and the dragon took both of his hands into its scaly paws. “Kabru!” it exclaimed in Falin's voice, and Kabru couldn't help but smile. The costume was really impressive, covered in material that mimicked scales really well. Because of the way the hood was shaped, it looked like the dragon had devoured Falin whole, with only her face sticking out of its mouth.

Holm couldn't help but be curious about that boy, the friend Kabru made in art class. He'd heard plenty about him from Kabru, in a chaotic, emotionally charged stream of consciousness that showed two things very clearly: Kabru loved him very much, and he was too terrified to ever do anything about it. This was unsurprising. Kabru never thought that he deserved anything good to keep for himself. The stronger his feelings were, the more he seemed to reject the fact that they had anything to do with himself at all. Feelings were something that were supposed to happen to other people, and yet they kept happening to him as well, and he would claw his own heart out just to stop them, if he only could. This had always been the case, as long as Holm had known him, and he only got better at hiding it – but sooner or later, the dam he'd built up would burst anyway. Holm had learned to recognise the signs and be there just when Kabru needed him.
