    Summary

    Did Falin really like bloodshed?

She had been a Healer, she had enjoyed being a Healer, before it all happened. She liked the satisfaction of healing someone and making them feel better. Especially her brother’s party. She liked avoiding violence, even if she wasn’t meek, and liked finding solutions to problems that were the most peaceful. She hugged ghosts till they left corpses, stopped in dungeons to look at bugs, that was always the person she was.

That was before that person literally dissolved to bones in that dungeon.

Before she awoke once, barely cognizant, then frenzied.

Before she awoke twice, something completely new.
    ---
[What if Falin never had that conversation with Shuro? What if Falin needed more time to discover herself? What if the Dragon soul was more than just instincts and urges? And what if it were all set in the background of a Tournament Arc featuring matchups no one considered but I'm giving you anyways?]

    (Tournament Fighter Falin AU and a stretched-out post-canon arc for Falin's self-actualization.)

    Summary

“It’s our last resort. We don’t have the money needed to get what we need, and we don’t have time. You tried your way, now let me try mine.”

There’s something in the way that she says it that catches Holm’s attention, his relaxed expression twisting into a silent acceptance. He shakes his head, turning his head away.

“The elves’ll arrest you for whatever you’re planning,” he casually mentions, “They found me and my research, and they held me in their prison for a good decade or so.”

Marcille sighs, letting go of Falin to get to her feet. “It’s worth it. I don’t care what the elves in the West think, I’m going to do what’s necessary."

    ————————

There isn’t enough left of Laios’ body to bring him back the normal way.

    Marcille has a solution.

    There are consequences that follow.

    Summary

Shielding the pan with her body, Falin shook her head. Laios froze a few steps away from her, furrowing his brow. Falin puffed out her cheeks, shooing him away with a wooden spoon. "No! No, I can make it myself," she insisted. "It's okay," she added, more softly, putting the spoon down as she turned towards the stove. "Let me make you breakfast for your birthday." Even without looking at him, she could sense that he wanted to protest, so without missing a beat, she added: "It's nice that you can share it with Kabru, now that he's here." Behind her, Laios huffed, but didn't say anything. He folded his arms over his chest, pouted, and finally took a seat. A win for Falin.

    Summary

The painting lacks color in his advisor's eyes. Now, as the blue seems to shine in Kabru's eyes, Laios finds himself put off by the dullness of the drawing. He sometimes forgets how much those irises have become a staple. Always by his side, at his table, in the garden. With a soft voice that urges him along, braving the diplomatic storms they keep facing. The way this painting looks now is an understatement of who Kabru is. Laios scrunches his nose at the thoughts that occupy his mind.

"Is it that bad?" Kabru asks, although his voice lacks any real concern. The advisor opens the buttons of his doublet to take it off, which makes Laios realize how hot the room has become because of the beaming sunlight. Kabru is only clad in a white flannel shirt now; it's a much nicer view than the painting.

"No, no!" Laios is quick to defend, although he deflates a bit seconds later: "It's just—he hasn't colored in your eyes yet. It looks odd."

    Or:
A meaningful bond, new and alluring, has sparked between King Laios Touden and his royal advisor Kabru of Utaya. Navigating their relationship proves to be a difficult task, but not to worry, such strong devotion should be enough to conquer any challenge, right?

    Summary

Kabru sat on the edge of the bed and looked into Laios' face. His lips were parted, blowing bubbles of saliva. Kabru gently stroked his cheek, massaged the bare skin behind his ear, and finally ruffled his hair. He leaned in to give Laios a kiss on the forehead, and another one on his temple, and yet one more on the very top of his head. Laios made a noise, something between a snore and a whimper, and he opened his eyes wide, looking up at Kabru in disbelief. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, and looked again, blinking owlishly. "Kabru," he whispered in awe. Kabru nodded, stroking his hair. "Kabru," Laios said once again, and wrapped his arms around his waist, burying his face in Kabru's lap. Kabru's heart squeezed in his chest as he watched Laios rub his cheek against his thigh. "Kabru, are you my birthday present?"

    Summary

Kabru cleared his throat and stood up from his seat to face her. "Ah, good morning!" he chirped, with genuine warmth in his voice, bowing his head slightly. Falin's eyes studied him from beneath lowered eyelids. Her cheeks were even rosier than usual, no doubt due to the cold weather outside. "How can I help you today, Miss Falin? Are you looking for a book?" Unlikely, he thought. If Falin was looking for a book, she would certainly find it on her own. Even if it wasn't in the library before she set foot in it, he wouldn't be surprised if her will itself manifested it. No, Falin showed no interest in the bookshelves, at least not right now. She was here to see him, only he had no idea why. It must have been something urgent, and something she wanted to discuss with him without Laios present, otherwise she would have waited until the birthday party. Therefore, it was presumably something related to Laios' birthday. "Or do you need something else?"

    Summary

Letting out a sigh, Kabru wrapped his arms around Laios' neck and buried his face against his chest. Still in his sleep, Laios wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him closer, rubbing his cheek against Kabru's hair. Kabru's heart squeezed in his chest. I love you, he thought, and squeezed his eyes shut as he rubbed his face against Laios' chest. How easy it was to believe that everything was going to be okay as he held the big, soft, warm body in his arms, heart beating against his chest, lungs expanding against his stomach. Just for a moment, the thought of losing all of it passed through his brain, making him shudder, but soon it was overshadowed by the comforting warmth of Laios' body as he slowly regained consciousness. He was alive. They were both alive. Kabru peppered Laios' neck with desperate kisses and looked up at his face.

    Summary

“It’s a good thing I stopped you from pouring that water out,” Holm murmurs to Marcille, who’s watching in pure befuddlement, “because it would have likely made passage through here much harder.”

As he says this, the water ripples in the center of the room. Kabru reaches for his sword, but Falin rather suddenly places a hand on his shoulder.

He furrows his brows, looking at her, but she isn’t even looking at him. Instead, she’s watching the water.

“If it’s an undine,” she whispers to him, “then your sword wouldn’t do anything. Don’t waste your time taking out your weapon.”

    ————————

It's difficult, really, to decipher what it is that Falin Touden really wants, and what her intentions are.

    It's driving Kabru absolutely insane.

    Summary

“Ah, Kabru! Do you want eggs for breakfast?” Kabru nodded. Eggs, in his experience, were a breakfast staple in this household. They always appeared in one form or another. He took it for granted, at this point, that he would have eggs for breakfast. It was only a question of how they would be cooked – boiled, scrambled, turned into an omelette? Either way, if they were made by Laios, they would certainly be delicious. “Hard-boiled? Yeah? Cool, that's what I figured,” Laios said, tapping his fingers together. “Actually, I wanna show you something. About eggs.”

    Summary

"This isn't how it was supposed to go. They had been rash and so excited to share something personal with Kabru that Laios had lost track of him in the middle of it. Did Kabru hate him now? Was this breach of personal boundaries too much? He sees those blue eyes starring into nothing, looking so deep in a thought in a place Laios can't reach, and then-

    Anger.

A swirl of ocean blue and a golden shine from the sun; working together to send a beam of fear and fury right into his very soul. Laios wants to never have to see that face again. The way Kabru's nose scrunched up in disdain and his eyebrows furrowed. Edges creasing between his eyes. Kabru looks so unlike himself when he does that. Laios hates the fact that he ended up being the reason for Kabru's wrath, but what exactly did the royal advisor hear in that music that upset him so?"

    __

Kabru Of Utaya and what it means to be a part of a culture. To see it misinterpreted and abused, as well as one's inability to do anything about it. How can Kabru possibly handle the complexity of an identity, when his name has been spread so thin you can barely see where it began and where it ended?

    Summary

This realisation shook Laios awake in an instant. He didn't have time to be upset about it, though, because the first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was Kabru's face, looking down at him with a gentle smile. He sat beside Laios with his legs curled up and his body leaning on the pillows, and he stroked his cheek with his fingertips, careful not to wake him up with his touch. When he noticed that Laios' eyes were open, his own twinkled happily. "Good morning, handsome. Did you sleep well?" he asked in a soft murmur as his hand moved from Laios' cheek towards his temple.

Laios' heart fluttered in his chest. Kabru told him that he would get to the pet names eventually, but for now, they still caught him off guard every time. "Good morning," he said, leaning into Kabru's touch as he rested his cheek on his knee. He reached out his hand to stroke Kabru's thigh. "You were in my dream!" he informed Kabru excitedly. "I think I saw our future house," he added, drawing a crude house on Kabru's skin, "it looked pretty cool."

    Summary

“We could make risotto with the barley and fish, since they’ll be working with us. Add the mimic in as an extra option,” she suggests over her shoulder, glancing over to the merfolk with furrowed brows. Sure, it looks like a blue and green blob from here, but she wonders if the plants could be used in a dish, could be—

“I can hear you thinking up there, and the answer is no,” Chilchuck snaps, glaring at her from his place out on the water's surface.

“I didn’t even say anything!” she protests, clutching her mace a bit tighter.

Rather than answer, he points at her, shaking his head with a grave look on his face. “You didn’t need to say anything. I know that look on your face. You were thinking about it.”

    Summary

Kabru is fine. He swears it up and down. He doesn't overthink things, he's analytical. He doesn't panic, he's just planning ahead. He isn't in love with Laios Touden, he just cares greatly for the king.

He isn't afraid of Falin Touden. Because that would be ridiculous.

Kabru of Utaya is totally fine.

    Summary

Kabru had to borrow one of his shirts to sleep in, because he didn't bring pyjamas or anything else that was comfortable and warm at the same time. Laios knew that his shirts would be perfect. There was a time when he would be too tired to undress himself once he got home from work, and he would fall asleep fully clothed, or only having taken his pants off. All of his shirts would be way too big for Kabru, so they should make really nice pyjamas. It made him happy to see that Kabru picked the Godzilla shirt. It really suited him. He was only going to let Kabru keep it for the nights, but he was probably going to spend most of his time sleeping, so there was no point in making him take it off. He could keep it until he felt better, Laios decided. And maybe then it would smell like him, at least for a little bit, until the next laundry day, and that was a nice thought too.

“Are you going,” he asked, resting his cheek in the palm of his hand as he watched Laios strain the noodles in the sink, careful not to pour them out accidentally, “to eat with me?”

Laios froze for a moment. He put the noodles aside and patted his stomach, furrowing his brow thoughtfully. Finally he gave a nod. “Yeah, I'm pretty hungry.” He looked into the large pot and stirred the contents. “Uhhh… do you want some of the meat, too? There's some chicken wings, a chicken leg, and a turkey wing.”

    Summary

The door opened suddenly, interrupting his miserable train of thought, and he came face to face with an honest-to-god dragon. Not the papier mache model Falin showed him last week, but something even bigger and capable of moving on its own. Golden eyes looked at him from inside the costume, and the dragon took both of his hands into its scaly paws. “Kabru!” it exclaimed in Falin's voice, and Kabru couldn't help but smile. The costume was really impressive, covered in material that mimicked scales really well. Because of the way the hood was shaped, it looked like the dragon had devoured Falin whole, with only her face sticking out of its mouth.

    Summary

Like everything else Laios owned, his personality rubbed all over the lunch box. It was red, of course, with some yellow accents, and rather large, so a lot of food could fit inside. There were stickers all over the lunch box, placed strategically so that they weren't at risk of getting torn or wrinkled whenever he popped the lid open. Predictably, the stickers depicted some of Laios' favourite things. There were wolves, there were tigers, there were dogs – only large breeds, of course, hunting dogs and sledding dogs and German shepherds. There were also quite a few Godzillas and what he now knew to be Pokemon. He wasn't familiar with all of them yet, but he was happy to at least recognise a few. This was Mewtwo. This was Charizard, Rhydon, Arcanine. He nodded to himself as he recalled their names and types. Soon enough, he was going to know everything he needed to know about all of Laios' favourites. It was fun to learn about them.

    Summary

Admittedly, it was a good impression. He could easily see the resemblance to the movie they'd just watched. The posture was pretty much as perfect as it could get without a giant tail to smash buildings with. Of course, Laios was certainly helped by the fact that he was already quite large and heavy, but it was still impressive that he could project the sheer size and strength of a monster so accurately. And he could imitate the noises, too, and really well, at that. The growls came from somewhere deep within his throat, and when he tilted his head back and roared, Kabru's heart actually stopped for a moment. He instinctively put his hands together and clapped softly, maintaining a reassuring smile. The neighbours definitely heard that one, but they were presumably used to hearing those kinds of noises from this room. Marcille in Falin, of course, must have heard it as well. Now they knew that the movie was over. Time would tell what they were going to do with that information. He was definitely excited to find out.

    Summary

Laios' bedroom door was open, and the man himself peered out shyly to wave at her. Just for a moment, his gloomy face lit up when he saw her, in a way that was simultaneously sincere enough to be charming, and pathetic enough to be embarrassing. Either way, in the blink of an eye, he retreated back into his room, presumably to keep doing whatever he was doing before she came. He'd gotten so used to getting out of the way that he was doing it without being asked to. On one hand, Marcille appreciated the space to do whatever she wanted with Falin, unbothered by his presence, but on the other hand, she couldn't help but feel bad about it. She never asked, because she dreaded getting an answer, but she hoped that he didn't feel like he had to hide from her in his own house. At least today he wasn't by himself, she thought. Because today...

    Summary

To date, Laios' room was probably the most interesting one he'd ever seen. At the very least, it was near the top. Laios made the most of the small space he'd been given to live in, and he filled it to the brim with the things he loved. And yet it never felt suffocating, it never felt small or difficult to move around in, perhaps because it was organised so well. It was clear that a lot of thought went into finding the right place for everything in it, the toys, the models, the games, the books, and, presumably last of all, the man himself, curled up in the bed he shared with his stuffed animals. Now that Kabru was about to visit Falin's room, he could barely contain his curiosity and enthusiasm. Was it going to be similar to Laios'? If so, in what ways? Was it full of things, too? Were they similar kinds of things, or very different? Or maybe Falin's room was radically different from Laios', sparse and messy? Ah, no, it probably wasn't going to be. Like Laios, Falin was an artist, and she kept her work there. How exciting. He couldn't wait to see it.
