The darkness molded itself to his whims when he stood taller with a sigh, freed from his feeble disguise. They were around the same height, but the stark change made his presence loom over her.
“A facade, hmm? I suppose it would be best for us to drop the pretenses.” His voice became smooth like velvet and held the strength of unyielding stone. His eyes roamed the ground at her feet, searching for a shadow they both knew wasn’t there, “How are your accommodations in the tower, Sophia Monad? There were always debates on the Isle about whether Simon kept you in a golden bird cage or a drafty prison cell.”
