Summary
Humanity is lost. It always has been and probably will always be. Even though most people don't know about it, there still are threats to humankind.
Vampires, spirits, gouls, werewolves, and the list goes on.
But, because of that, some humans are trained and capable of ending such things. The so-called hunters.
Castiel is one of them. He's probably one of the most admirable ones, if he does say so himself. He’s hunted a lot of things on his life until now. But a hunter's life has its risks.
Probably the worse of them being killed and going to hell.
Castiel’s spent his life hunting, killing things, and saving people. But on a random day, everything just blew up.
His father died, then his brother died, then he made a deal to bring Gabriel back, then he himself died, and then he went to hell.
He thought his life was over for good.
And then, after spending the longest time in the pit, Castiel was dragged out by an angel named Dean, who's willing to put him as the center of the plans of God, which can be even more dangerous than the life that Castiel had until now.

Summary
The world was divided in the war. The Winchester siblings were off God knows where, Crowley and Corio were ruling over Hell, and Pandora and Castiel had a tight rein on heaven. Not to mention the civvies that got caught in the crossfires or the Hunters that were forced to pick sides if they weren’t strong enough to be a part of a battalion. The war had no end in sight, being divided in three, then four, word had started to spread of a fifth faction, but who could be sure? Hellians lie, Angelics never speak, most civvies were dead or dying, and Hunters do all of the above. No one saw an end to the war until a ragtag team that was more mismatched than most Hunter outposts came together to take care of it. But would their efforts be effective?

Of course, if bad memories didn't have a chokehold on Sam, if celestial bodies weren't moody, if Lucifer wasn't obsessive and if in the middle of the spell the Trickster didn't feel compelled to do whatever necessary to complete the spell.

One year and six months have passed since Sam, Dean and Jack defeated Chuck. Jack is the new God, the bunker is full of the new generation of hunters who are excited to learn from the best in the business, and Sam and Dean rarely work any cases these days. Everything is fine, but something's missing.
Someone is missing.
Dean still grieves the loss of everything he never got to have and Sam misses his best friend. The brothers have tried everything to bring Castiel back, but with Jack MIA all of their attempts were unsuccessful.
Until Sam figures out a way to get into the Empty.
Dean has prepared an entire speech, full of parallels such as "Good things do happen, Cas.", "I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition!" and most importantly "I love you."However, once in the Empty, Sam and Dean find out that Castiel escaped a long time ago.

No, correction: his first mistake was listening to Gabriel when he told him he should sign up for the mystery spell package. Castiel didn’t much care for mysteries, surprises, whatever you call it, having had a fair share of them go awry in his several hundred years of life.
