At first Buck thinks he’s made a mistake, the way he feels Eddie’s muscles tense up next to his. But then Eddie relaxes into the kiss, and Buck knows he’s made a mistake. Because here it is, the thing he’s wanted for so long before he ever knew he wanted it, the thing he’s built his life around without even realizing, and Eddie is giving it to him only to say goodbye.
But Buck is greedy, and selfish, and tired of acting like he’s good. So he takes what he can get. He crawls into Eddie’s lap, smashes their mouths together so hard their teeth clack.
He read once about this time in the 1800s, when people ran two trains facing each other down the same track to watch them crash into each other just for the hell of it. The explosion was bigger than expected, and the debris killed two people. That’s what this kiss is, a deadly train crash with no real goddamn point, and Buck knows he’s been a casualty seven years in the making.
Eddie leaves tomorrow.
