desperate to escape the pressure of becoming the future chief of his village, rinne amagi leaves behind all he knows to chase his faraway dream of becoming an idol. quickly, he meets his first friend, niki, who may or may not be the missing piece of himself he has been craving all of his life.
this fic is a (hopefully) realistic year-by-year depiction of rinne and niki's relationship from the moment they met until the present timeline. it is a slowburn romance as well! this fic is basically entirely headcanon based since there is so little known about what rinniki were up to for the past five years. however, most of the headcanons are based upon things said in the canon events. there is also a huge theme in this surrounding the amagi brothers and their relationship.

Since he could talk, Hiiro has always called Rinne the same thing.
When he was really little, he would experiment just a bit more. Rinne fondly remembers the times when Hiiro was first learning to walk. When his excitable baby of a little brother would look up at him, and those wide little blue eyes of his would light up like he was seeing his favorite thing in the whole world.
He would call out for nii-nii with that babbling little voice of his, and it was Rinne’s favorite thing in the entire world.
The adults scolded it out of him. Scolded that excitable little boy into someone quiet. Someone who looked up at Rinne and only said Nii-sama in a calm, calculated kind of voice that started making Rinne’s stomach turn, after a while.
He hates being called Nii-sama.

He takes in the sight of the young teen in front of his apartment, of narrow shoulders clad in black against the grayish sky behind him, of the dimming light of the quickly setting sun reflected on the snowy cityscape. And, as he does so, he feels a deep unease.

It did make sense. The logic was firm, solid, so perfectly and unbelievably stupid Rinne hadn’t a clue how this village of theirs had even lasted this long, for decades and decades of endless idiocy. If their second in command was meant to just stay silent and follow the first’s lead without a single opposing question, a single opposing thought, what happened when the first was wrong?
