1- rant to me about a book you hate >:)

Okay, this one isn't so much about the book itself as it is people's (mis)interpretation of it, but it has to be said.

Les Miserables is NOT a Catholic book.

"Oh, but the bishop —" Yeah. The bishop who's good and perfect and the Christian ideal whose radical charity kickstarts Jean Valijean's redemption? What does he do?

He gives away his candlesticks and then dies.

Now, these are his personal candlesticks that are part of his household, but candlesticks as an object are immediately recognizable as trappings of the Mass. It's a thinly veiled version of "If the Church REALLY wanted to help people, it would sell all of its gold and use the money to feed them." (To give Victor Hugo credit, I think he actually wanted the beauty to be preserved, e.g. the cathedral of Notre Dame, BUT he wanted the Church's treasures secularized. "Given to the people," in his mind, intact.)

He becomes even more blatant about this when he talks about the convents of France with a pretense of scientific impartiality. His whole spiel (pages and pages of beautiful prose) can be boiled down to "These used to serve a valuable purpose. Now they don't. Get rid of them."

Is anti-Catholic sentiment the ONLY point of the novel? Of course not. Is there a lot in it that's still good and true, and is it completely fair for so many Catholics to enjoy and love it? Of course. But people. I am pleading. I am begging you. STOP acting like it's a Christian novel. It's a humanist work written by an anti-Catholic deist.

God the Father was always Father, will always be Father, and would have been Father even if God had never created. His Fatherhood has everything to do with Son and nothing to do with creation. Any Christian who believes “Father” merely a helpful metaphor has fallen into error.

God is not the Father of the unbaptized except by analogy. God is the Father of the baptized because they are adopted into the Sonship of Christ, and it is now no longer they who live but Christ who lives in them. “Father” isn’t a metaphor, nor is it’s proper relation to mankind.

An important aspect of this is that God owes us nothing. Insofar as he can be said to owe us anything, it is because he freely chose to enter into a covenant with us. This mercy and condescension should stagger us, that God so loved the world, that he so loved creatures of dust.

one of my skills is going on pleasant walks in the most unwalkable environments ever

There is no sidewalk. Also the road has no shoulder. And there is no level, clear ground beside the road. "I think I'll go for walk" says I. The weeds and grasses are knee to shoulder high. Sometimes the ground is a 45 degree slope dropping towards the road that bends my ankles sideways to walk on it, sometimes it's just a muddy ditch. Sometimes you have to jump down into the ditch or climb out of it. There are thorns and brambles. The cars and trucks are speeding past with extreme ferocity. There is garbage and litter along the road. My instincts dictate I must go on my pleasant walks. What a pleasant walk

my custom when staying in a new place is to find out how far away from it I can reach on foot and tbh it's very rewarding. you can explore little hay fields and vacant lots and you'd be shocked at how much biodiversity there is.

i keep finding uncommon plants with few occurrences literally just in fields and road sides

i think it's really interesting how most of the biodiverse environments humans create in my area are accidental. a lapse in "management," a bit of neglect, in a place that provides whatever kind of unique conditions and it becomes something super special

Another one of my skills is picking out biodiversity hotspots in my surroundings. Little patches of the landscape that have unusual variety of plants.

I'm not very good at it because environments constantly shock and surprise me.

An area with a fixed management plan will be less biodiverse than an area that gets managed "whenever someone gets around to it." Transition zones between two types of areas are more biodiverse. Ambiguous places of unclear purpose are more biodiverse. Lower income areas are more biodiverse. "The bad part of town" is more biodiverse. Any small area with novel or unique characteristics distinct from all of its surroundings is more biodiverse. Proximity to suburbs lowers biodiversity. Suburbs themselves are the most ecologically sterile places you've ever seen.
