WATER CONSERVATION IN

MADHYA PRADESH AND

BIHAR

CLASS – 7 ‘M’.
How to conserve water in madhya
Pradesh and bihar
◦ Rain Water harvesting –Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is the collection and storage of rain, rather than
allowing it to run off. Rainwater is collected from a roof like surface and redirected to a tank, cistern,
deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), aquifer, or a reservoir with percolation, so that it seeps down and
restores the ground water.
◦ Jal sakti abhiyan –The Jal Shakti Abhiyan is aimed to accelerate water harvesting, conservation and bore
well recharge activities in 256 water-stressed diricts.
◦ Atal bhujal yojana-Atal Bhujal Yojana is a groundwater management scheme launched by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on
25 December 2019. The purpose of the scheme is to improve groundwater management in seven states of
India.
◦ Drip irrigation-Drip irrigation involves placing tubing with emitters on the ground along side the plants.
The emitters slowly drip water into the soil at the root zone. Because moisture levels are kept at an
optimal range, plant productivity and quality improve.
1. Check your toilet for leaks.

Put a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the coloring begins to appear in the bowl, you have a leak that may be wasting multiple gallons of water a day.

Small steps to save water at home

2. Stop using your toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket

Every cigarette butt or tissue you flush away also flushes away at least 1.6 gallons of water.

3. Put a plastic bottle in your toilet tank

Put an inch or two of sand or pebbles in the bottom of a one liter bottle to weigh it down. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and put it in your toilet tank, safely away from the operating mechanism. In an average home, the bottle may save five gallons or more of
water every day without harming the efficiency of the toilet. If your tank is big enough, you may even be able to put in two bottles.

4. Take shorter showers

A typical shower uses two to five gallons of water a minute. Limit your showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rise off.

5. Install water-saving shower heads or flow restrictors

Your hardware or plumbing supply store stocks inexpensive shower heads or flow restrictors that will cut your shower flow to about three gallons a minute instead of five to ten. They are easy to install, and your showers will still be cleansing and refreshing.

6. Take baths

A partially filled tub uses less water than all but the shortest showers.

7. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth

Before brushing, wet your brush and fill a glass for rinsing your mouth.

10 WAYS TO SAVE WATER AT HOME

Our local leaders are facing the pressing question of how to ensure a clean, reliable water supply with strains from population growth, booming development, and global warming. Many
communities are already enforcing water restrictions. There are a few simple things you can do at home to ease the burden on your local water supply and save money in the process.

Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.

Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when you have a full load.
Use a low flow shower head and faucet aerators.
Fix leaks.
Install a dual flush or low flow toilet or put a conversion kit on your existing toilet.
Don’t overwater your lawn or water during peak periods, and install rain sensors on irrigation systems.
Install a rain barrel for outdoor watering.
Plant a rain garden for catching stormwater runoff from your roof, driveway, and other hard surfaces.
Monitor your water usage on your water bill and ask your local government about a home water audit.
◦ Share your knowledge about saving water through conservation and efficiency with your neighbors.
◦ Jal Jeevan Mission, is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual
household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. The programme will also implement
source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water
management, water conservation, rain water harvesting. The Jal Jeevan Mission will be based on a
community approach to water and will include extensive Information, Education and communication as a
key component of the mission. The Jal Jeevan Mission will be based on a community approach to water

United Nations (UN) Water Conservation Initiatives
The UN leads numerous global campaigns for water conservation, such as the ‘Water for Life Decade’ (2005-
2015) and World Water Day. The focus of these initiatives is to promote water conservation and improve water
sanitation worldwide.

Understanding the mechanics of these water conservation campaigns and schemes is pivotal for civil service
aspirants. It not only aids in tackling the prelims and mains but also in formulating practical solutions during
the interview stage.

Conclusion

In conclusion, effective water conservation strategies are crucial for ensuring sustainable water management in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. These states, with their unique
geographical and climatic conditions, face significant challenges in water availability and quality. Through the implementation of innovative techniques such as rainwater
harvesting, watershed management, and the promotion of efficient irrigation practices, both regions can mitigate the adverse impacts of water scarcity.

Public awareness campaigns and community involvement play a pivotal role in the success of these conservation efforts. By fostering a culture of water stewardship,
encouraging the adoption of water-saving technologies, and reinforcing the importance of sustainable practices, we can collectively secure water resources for future
generations.

Investing in water conservation not only addresses the immediate needs but also contributes to long-term economic growth and environmental stability. Together, by
prioritizing water conservation, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar can lead the way in building resilient and sustainable water management systems that benefit both the people
and the environment.
