Nature of Psychology:

•Scientific study of human behaviour and all mental and related processes
(actions, feelings, thinking) that underpin human behaviour in various domains and
contexts

•Individual as unit of study (social or group context)

•Applied science – use psychological knowledge and methods to understand


human behaviour

•Provide explanations for what, why, how of human behaviour

•Explain psychological wellness and maladjustment

•Umbrella concept of which I/O psychology & its subfields are related to it.

•I/O psychology has developed its own theories, concepts & practices but still use
many psychological concepts & practices.

• Scientific study of human behaviour in the work or organisational


context.

• Aim is to influence human behaviour & related processes in


organisations to get optimal work & business performance.

• Individual and Groups as unit of study

• Industrial psychologists & HR specialists can assume various roles &


tasks depending on the specialised field.
– Main role- optimise fit between employees & workplaces
– I-O psychology is a science --well founded in theory, research
and methodologies to facilitate employee and organisational
behaviour.

3.Career or vocational psychology/counselling

Studies career development issues with regard to individuals,


employment, unemployment, career-related issues in organisations and
also non-work influencing factors

Career choices, congruence between job and career choices and


organizational contexts, coping with organizational change, conflicts in
career progression, work stress and work-related

4.Employment relations/ industrial or labour relations

Deals with behavioural dynamics, communication and conflict management


between individuals and groups of employees, employers and other parties

9.Employee and organisational well-being

Study of employee and organisational factors, conditions and behaviours


that may facilitate or hinder employee and organisational effectiveness and
performance, as well as the methods of evaluating, managing and promoting
work place health and well-being

THE NATURE AND IDENTITY OF I-O PSYCHOLOGY

Can be the same if trained as professional psychologists

If not - training and roles/tasks will differ

I-O psychologists are professional psychologists (Masters or doctorate degrees and


registered with the HPCSA and Professional Board for Psychology)

HR –trained persons cannot register or function as psychologists—may not execute


psychological acts—e.g. assessment and counseling/therapy (SABPP)

HR-persons involved in the management of employment, while I-O psychologists


influence and facilitate employee and organisational behaviour in terms of in-depth
psychological knowledge

Reasons why I-O Psychology is a Scientific discipline:

Adapted and developed its own identity, with unique theories, research areas,
application and academic and professional training programmes.

Uses scientific research to build and verify knowledge, and develop and apply
knowledge in purposeful methods and practices with the view of influencing,
developing and optimising the performance, the relationships and wellness of
employees in workplace.
