Identifying Lab

Instruments in
Biotechnology
Characteristics & Functions of Lab Tools
Autoclave
• Autoclaves operate at high
temperature and pressure in order
to kill microorganisms and spores.
• They are used to decontaminate
certain biological waste and sterilize
media, instruments and lab ware.
Waterbath
• A water bath is a laboratory
equipment that is used to incubate
samples at a constant temperature
over a long period of time.
• Water bath is a preferred heat source
for heating flammable chemicals
instead of an open flame to prevent
ignition.
Hot Plate
• A lab hot plate is an elementary
piece of laboratory equipment that
is mainly used in chemistry and
biology for heating at precise
temperatures.
• Hot plates are laboratory tools
used to uniformly heat samples
Incubator
• Incubator, in microbiology, is an
insulated and enclosed device that
provides an optimal condition of
temperature, humidity, and other
environmental conditions required
for the growth of organisms.

• An incubator is a piece of vital

laboratory equipment necessary for
the cultivation of microorganisms
under artificial conditions.
Centrifuge
• Centrifugation is a method of
separating molecules having
different densities by spinning
them in solution around an axis
(in a centrifuge rotor) at high
speed.
• It is one of the most useful and
frequently employed techniques
in the molecular biology
laboratory.
Micropipette

A micropipette is a common yet an

essential laboratory instrument used to
accurately and precisely transfer volumes of
liquid in the microliter range.

A micropipette can come in one of many

standard sizes, and the most common can
measure out a volume between 0.1
microliters and 1000 microliters. This is
0.0001 milliliters to 1 milliliter
Graduated Cylinder
• A graduated cylinder, also known
as a measuring cylinder or mixing
cylinder is a common piece of
laboratory equipment used to
measure the volume of a liquid
• Each marked line on the
graduated cylinder represents
the amount of liquid that has
been measured.
Compound Microscope
• A compound light microscope is a
microscope with more than one
lens and its own light source.
• In this type of microscope, there are
ocular lenses in the binocular
eyepieces and objective lenses in a
rotating nosepiece closer to the
specimen.
Electronic Balance
• Electronic balance is an instrument
used in the accurate measurement
of weight of materials.
• Electronic balance is a significant
instrument for the laboratories for
precise measurement of chemicals
which are used in various
experiments..
Petri Dish
• Petri dish is majorly used as
laboratory equipment in the field
of biology & chemistry.
• The dish is used to culture cells
by providing storage space and
preventing them from getting
contaminated.
Beaker
• Beakers are useful as a
reaction container or to hold
liquid or solid samples.
• They are also used to catch
liquids from titrations and
filtrates from filtering
operations.
Eppendorf
• Eppendorf Tubes are single-use
tubes made from polypropylene
for preparing, mixing,
centrifuging, transporting and
storing solid and liquid samples
and reagents
• The unit accommodates 24 tubes
with 0.5 mL , 1.5 mL or 2.0 mL
volumes.
Laminar Air Flow
• A laminar flow cabinet or
tissue culture hood is a
carefully enclosed bench
designed to prevent
contamination of biological
samples, or any particle
sensitive materials.
• Due to the direction of air flow,
the sample is protected from
the user but the user is not
protected from the sample.
