Lesson 3:

Continuation of:
Measurement in
Evaluation
Main Ideas:

4. Tools for Measurement in Evaluation.

5. Classification of Educational Measure.
6. Scales of Measurement
Tools for measurement in
Evaluation

-Summative assessment
-Formative assessment
-Analytical Assessment
-Holistic Grading
Summative

A summative assessment is an evaluation at

the end. It will tell if the students has met the
standards set by the teacher.
Different Forms of Summative Assessment

-Midterm
-Final
-Term Projects
-Papers/Essays
-Standardized tests
Formative

Formative assessments are evaluations as you

go. The students are assessed if they have
enough understanding of the learning objectives
before the class moves on. Adjustments can be
made to best fit the students’ needs before
moving on to the next lesson.
Different Forms of Formative Assessment

-Quizzes
-Votes/polls
-Homework
-Reviews
-In-class assignments
-End of chapter questions
-Summary presentations
-Practice tests
Analytic- scoring provides students with
at least a rating score for each criterion. It
offers teachers enough room to provide
some feedback .
-Close textual analysis
-Reviews
-Multimodal and oral presentations
-Essay.
Holistic- is a method of evaluating a
composition based on its overall quality.
It is often used in large-
scale assessments.
Tools of evaluation in education and
teaching

-Oral Tests
-Written evaluation
Oral Text

-The oral exam (also oral test or viva voce) is a practice in many
schools and disciplines, where an examiner poses questions to the
student in spoken form. The student has to answer the question in
such a way as to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the subject
in order to pass the exam.
Written evaluation techniques/devices

-written tests are tests that are administered on paper or on a

computer. A test taker who takes a written test could respond to
specific items by writing or typing within a given sp[ace of the
test or on a separate form or document.
Classification of Educational Measure

1.  Self-referenced how the student is progressing with reference

to himself/herself.
2.  Criterion-referenced how the student is progressing with
reference to the criteria set by the teacher. Criterion-referenced –
individual scores are interpreted in terms of the student’s
performance relative to some standard or criterion
3.  Norm-referenced how the student is progressing with
reference to his/her peer group. Norm-referenced – individual
scores are interpreted relative to the scores of others in a well
defined Norming group.
Scales of Measurement

-scales of measurement is essential in order to

know something about presenting,
interpreting and analysing data.
4 types or levels:

1. Nominal
2. Ordinal
3. Interval
4. Ratio
Nominal- In nominal measurement the
numerical values just “name” the attribute
uniquely. The level of measurement is simply
a matter of distinguishing by name, e.g., 1 =
male, 2 = female.
Ordinal- Ordinal refers to order in
measurement. In ordinal measurement the
attributes can be rank-ordered.
Interval- An interval scale is a scale on
which equal intervals between objects,
represent equal differences. It provide
information about order, and also possess
equal intervals.
Ratio- Using a ratio scale permits
comparisons such as being twice as high, or
one-half as much.
