CONCEPTUAL IDEA BEHIND THE PROJECT:
• The village was produced with the idea that the residents were going to alter it in many ways, therefore homes are
freestanding.
• Differently priced plans appeal to a wide variety of income levels.
• The development supports Correa’s theory that low-rise architecture and high-density planning are not
contradictory approaches to
housing.
• Correa clubbed three clusters of seven houses together and made a bigger
Courtyard of 12m x 12m.
• He used traditional village material for construction (bricks, wooden shingles,
Stone blocks).

6 acre of land
Meant for 550 families
Approx. no. of people living are 2750
Assuming 5 people live in a house, area per
Main Courtyard
person is 2 sqmt. 20x20
1 unit = 8X8 =64sqmt.
No. of people per house = 5
1 module ( 7 units) = 35 no. of people
therefore,
area per person = 64/35 = 1.8sq.m≈ 2sq.m

PROBLEMS FACED
The village originally had a high concentration
of artists. Today, less than 10% of the residents
are artists. Rest of them work in service sector
Reasons for leaving their homes:
• No provisions were made for the common
spaces in the center of each cluster of houses.
• No one was in charge of maintaining them
• Concept of keeping toilet block outside was
not appreciated
• Some clusters of the village became mini-
slums
• Studio spaces (72-76sqmt.) were too small to
work in and also to stay in.
