Cruise Ship Owners / Operators
Preface
The AMEM Publication “Cruise Ship Owners/Operators and Passenger Ship Financing & Management Compa-
nies” in fact is more than a directory!
Company co-ordinates
It is not only the most comprehensively and accurately structured listing of cruise ship owners and operators in the
industry, despite the fact that the majority of cruise lines is more and more keeping both the company’s coordinates
and the managerial staff secret.
The entire industry is obtrusively focused on selling their services weeks and months ahead of the specific cruise
date, collecting the money at a premature stage and staying almost unattainable for their clients pre and after cruise
requests. They simply ignore the fact that there are suppliers and partners around who wish to keep in touch
personally at least with the cruise line’s technical and procurement departments!
The rest of the networking-information is camouflaged by the yellow-pages industry, which is facing a real prospect
of extinction. The economic downturn is sending the already ailing business into a tailspin. The yellow-pages
publishers basically give back in one downturn what took seven years to grow!

Cruise Ship Management
An outsourced industry – cruise line operators – is outsourcing its management obligations to cruise ship ma-
nagement companies! Everything what is left is cash management!
Cruise Ship Management companies provide professionally organized technical, commercial and crew
management services. In order to ensure trouble-free quality ship operation and to preserve the ship’s value, cruise
ship managers can cover a big array of responsibility:
• full range of crew management and manning
• continuous technical support from a dedicated shore-based staff
• providing best practices in quality management to ensure continuous improvement of all activities and procedures
• ensuring safe operations of ships throughout the fleet in accordance with national and international requirements
and industry standards
• continuous improvement of safety and quality on board by means of regular technical and marine vessel inspections
• assuring validity of requested documentation and certificates
• cost-effective procurement based on buying power
• placement of cost-efficient insurance coverage based on a large and reputable fleet profile
• supplying ship owners with reliable budget management containing budget controlling and regular reporting in
full compliance with accounting international standards, rules and regulations
• ensuring a smooth takeover of vessels through a full range of services related to commercial and contractual
issues
• ensuring the vessel’s standard including permanent and preventive/predictive maintenance, carrying out dry
dockings and ship repairs as well as continuous technical support
• efficient and safe handling of all types of tonnage
• constantly communicating with ships' commands, charterers, brokers, port agents and bunker suppliers
• monitoring of compliance with health and safety regulations
• arranging for conversions and upgrades
• on-board hotel operations
• ship chandlery
• sourcing of interiors, gym equipment, guests toiletries, galley appliances, cookware, cleaning products

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises
Ballindamm 25
D-20095 Hamburg
Germany, Europe
Hapag-Lloyd was formed in 1970 through a merger of Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) and Norddeutscher Lloyd.
Hapag – Lloyd Cruises was acquired by TUI AG a tourism conglomerate in 1998 and is a fully owned TUI
subsidiary since 2002.
With the advent of the new 516-guest Europa 2, to be delivered in May 2013, Hapag Lloyd Cruises will be
concentrating on the luxury and expedition market much more. The German-only Columbus 2 will be returned to
Oceania Cruises at the end of her charter in April 2014.
Europa, regarded by many as the most beautiful yacht in the world, was for ten years in a row the only cruise ship
worldwide to be awarded more than 5 stars by Berlitz Cruise Guide in 2011.
Hapag Lloyd have a simple philosophy: Not to have the most guests, but the most satisfied.
In 1997, decades after the demise of passenger cruising on the Great Lakes, German cruise line Hapag Lloyd
brought their 420-passenger cruise ship Columbus, filled primarily with German travellers, to sail the Great Lakes.
Between 1997 and 2011, Columbus became the largest ship to cruise the lakes, but she left the fleet in 2012.
During the years 2009 and 2011, Travel Dynamics operated the 100-berth Clelia II, which was replaced by the

MSC Cruises is a division of Mediterranean Shipping Company . S.A. which acquired Flotta Lauro in 1989 and
renamed it StarLauro Cruises. The company name was changed to MSC Cruises in 1995.MSC Cruises has rapidly
grown since then and is the fourth largest cruise operator in the world today. The company seems to have almost
„come out of nowhere“, it operates the youngest cruise liner fleet in the world, with only one ship being built prior
to 2000. One of the many innovations MSC has applied on board their ships is „MSC Yacht Club“. MSC keeps faith
to their partners. Almost all ships were built in St. Nazaire, the classification society is Bureau Veritas and the lead
interior architect and designer is De Jorio Design, Italy. MSC Cruises has marked construction of the MSC Preziosa
in October 2012 by laying two commemorative coins in a traditional ceremony at the STX Europe shipyard in St.
Nazaire, France. The MSC Preziosa has called a lot of attention of cruise ship experts because of its previous life
as Hannibal Gaddafi’s big toy. The original order for „The Phoenician“ was launched by the Gaddafi family, where
one of the extraordinary features included a gigantic tank which was supposed to house Hannibal Gaddafi’s sharks.
The current works are focusing on converting the vessel into an MSC ship. A job not that complicated as the
contract was based on the blueprints of the MSC Fantasia. When completed the vessel will be able to hold 4.345
passengers, making it one of the biggest ships ever to sail in the MSC fleet.

Norwegian Cruise Line was founded in 1966 by Knut Kloster a Norwegian ship owner and Ted Arison with just one
830-ton ship – the Sunward-offering low-cost Caribbean cruises under the name Norwegian Caribbean Line.
Knut Kloster was a visionary and creative genius. He was responsible for many of the cruise innovations that have
now become standard through the industry. He transformed the ship as a means of transportation into a destination.
Two extremely strong characters like Knut Kloster and Ted Arison could not stay at the helm of the company for a
long time. After a heavy dispute, Ted Arison left the company in 1972 and founded Carnival Cruise Line.
NCL made headlines with the acquisition of the liner France in 1979. After extensive conversion work at the cost of
more than USD 100 millions the ship was renamed Norway. Her succes paved the way for a new era of giant cruise
ships. NCL was acquired by Star Cruises, subsidiary of Malaysia-based investment holding Genting Group, in
2000. The Genting Group had 26 years of experience in developing, operating and marketing casinos and integrated
resorts in different parts of the world.
In 2002, NCL purchased the half-completed hull of the first Project America ship, at the time under construction at
Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, USA, which was towed to Germany to be completed at the Lloyd
Werft in Bremerhaven. Subsequently NCL acquired the right to move two ships built entirely outside the United
States under the US flag, making it possible to start a US-flagged operation under the brand name NCL America.
In 2007, Star Cruises took the market by surprise when it sold 50% of NCL for USD 1 billion to US-based Apollo
Management – then owners of Oceania Cruises – in order to strengthen NCL’s financial position.
NCL was the first cruise brand to sail from Miami in 1966. NCL is headquartered in Miami with affiliates in London
and Wiesbaden, and – in order to strengthen the long lasting relationship with the „Cruise Capital of the World“ –
beginning in the spring of 2014, Norwegian Getaway will be homeported in Miami year-round, sailing the Eastern
Caribbean.

Ocean Star Cruises, founded in 2010, is a cruise line brand, based in Mexico. This ill-fated cruise line purchased
its first ship, Ocean Star Pacific, in December 2010 from Louis Cruises to sail the waters of the Mexican Riviera.
The vessel underwent a multimillion refit in March 2011 at the AMK yard in Curacao. On its first voyage, the ship
lost power because of a fire in the engine room and went adrift with 748 passengers on board six miles off
Huatulco, Mexico, on April 15, 2011, just five months after Carnival Splendor.
Both vessels were flying the flag of Panama. Both operators were fortunate that the weather conditions were
favourable and aid was nearby. What a coincidence! The generators could not be started again and Ocean Star
Pacific – like Carnival Splendor – was lying dead in the sea for hours! Another near miss disaster!

Oceania Cruises was founded in 2002 by luxury cruise industry veterans Joe Watters and Frank Del Rio, the latter
being the former vice president of Renaissance Cruises. The founding management team included industry
veterans Bob Binder, Robin Lindsay, James Rodriguez, Jeff Drew and Howard Sherman. The company chartered
the former Renaissance Cruises ship R Two from Cruiseinvest and renamed her Insignia in October 2002. In April
2003 the Insignia was chartered to the French travel agency TRM for three months, during which Oceania Cruises
operated no vessels. On 15 June 2003 Oceania Cruises re-commenced service with two ships: the Insignia was
renamed Regatta and a new ship (R One, a sister ship of the Insignia / Regatta, also chartered from Cruiseinvest)
entered service as the new Insignia.
In November 2005, a third R-class ship entered service for Oceania Cruises when the company chartered the R Five
from Cruiseinvest and renamed her Nautica. At the naming ceremony of the Nautica, Frank del Rio announced the
plan of adding a fourth ship, Marina, to the Oceania Cruises fleet in July 2007. This however did not come to pass.
In February 2007, the majority of Oceania Cruises' stock were sold to the New York-based Apollo Management.
The following month Oceania made a memorandum agreement with the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy to construct two
new 1,260-passenger ships. The contract was finalised in June 2007, with delivery dates for the new Oceania
Class ships set for January 2011 and July 2011. The contract also included an option for a third vessel of the same
type that could have been delivered in May 2012, but Oceania declined the option.
Oceania Cruises is owned by Prestige Cruise Holding. PCH was formed in 2007 to manage select assets –
Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises – in Apollo Management’s cruise investment portfolio and is the
market leader in the upper premium and luxury segments of the cruise industry.

Princess Cruises began in 1965, when founder Stanley McDonald chartered Canadian Pacific Limited’s Alaska

Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation in 1974. In October 2000, the then P&O demerged its passenger division

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Member of

Regent Seven Seas Cruises RSSC is one of the world’s most luxury cruise lines, formerly known as Radisson
Seven Seas Cruises, headquartered in Miami, Florida. Apollo Management, the investment group, purchased
Regent Seven Seas Cruises from Carlson Cos. for 1 billion USD, in February 2008. Apollo Investments also own
Oceania Cruises and 50 per cent of Norwegian Cruise Line. Prestige Cruise Holdings PCH is the parent company
of Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. PCH manages select assetts in Apollo Management’s cruise
investment portfolio and is led by Chairman and CEO Frank Del Rio and President and COO Kunal S. Kamlani.
PCH is one of the market leaders in the upper-premium and luxury segments of the cruise industry with over
6.400 berths. Rumours of a new Regent ship have been circulating for years but gained particular momentum in
2011, when Frank Del Rio admitted he had been thinking about expanding the three-ship-fleet. If it comes to a firm
contract, it is likely that T. Mariotti, Italy will build the new vessel. Effective January 31, 2013, cruise industry
veteran Mark Conroy stepped down as President of Regent Seven Seas Cruises RSSC and shifted to a new
strategic role as executive advisor to Prestige Cruise Holding PCH, parent company of both Regent Seven Seas
Cruises and Oceania Cruises.
End of an era
With Mark Conroy stepping down as President of Regent Seven Seas Cruises at the End of January 2013, Prestige
Cruise Holdings PCH President and Chief Operating Officer Kunal Kamlani will assume the RSSC presidency in
addition to serving as President of sister brand Oceania Cruises. Conroy has helmed the line since its start as

ResidenSea Ltd.
14471 Miramar Parkway
Miramar, FL 33027
USA
The World of ResidenSea project was under the leadership of Knut Kloster Jun., his family and several recognized
names in the cruise industry. The Kloster family started Norwegian Cruise Line in 1966 together with Ted Arison and
Knut Kloster Jun.who has served as chairman of both – Royal Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line. The marine
architects on the project have designed luxury cruise ships like Seabourn Pride, Seabourn Spirit, Silver Cloud,
Silver Wind, Sea Goddess I & II, and Royal Viking.
The hull of The World was built in Landskrona by Öresundsvarvet, Sweden and it was then towed to Fosen
Mekaniske Verksted in Rissa, Norway, for completion. The World was launched in 2002, and managed by
Silversea Cruises Ltd. In October 2003, the residents purchased the ship. Since then the company is managed by
ResidenSea, Miramar, Florida. ResidenSea is responsible for operations and administration of the ship, including
hiring hundreds of employees. The residents, through their elected board of directors and a network of committees,
provide guidance to the management of the ship’s itinerary, finances and lifestyle. The owners in fact have become
a community. Many of the high dollar paying owners bought their shares of the ship as they believed the security
will be better than that on regular cruise ships. This turned out not to be true and there were repeatedly social
tensions because short timers often were tempted to take too much advantage of the free alcoholic drinks.
The World is the largest privately owned residential yacht. It is not so much a liner as an array of floating apartments
that sails around the world in pursuit of fair weather, special international events, natural attractions and spiritual
experiences. Too often changing management is an indication for turbulences in a company. The first President and
Chief Executive Officer was Fredy M.Dellis. On July 20, 2009 Thomas McAlpin an industry veteran with more than
20 years of domestic and international experince in ship management and operations was appointed President and
Chief Executive Officer. Only three years later, ResidenSea Ltd. announced that Robert Riley had been appointed
as President and Chief Executive Officer.
No doubt, the project “The World“, a concept of residences at sea, is exeperiencing serious problems.
While a typical cruise ship of that size easily can carry 1500 passengers, this ship accommodates an average of
close to 300 guests. Annual maintenance, fuel and shore side energy costs have been exploding, not to mention
new environmental regulations, the demand for condos stalls and disputes between owners of condos and tourists
escalate while costs for unsold suites can no longer be covered.
Knut Kloster’s Jr. utopian dream is endangered to slip into a financial disaster.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. RCCL Member of
Royal Caribbean International RCI
1050 Caribbean Way
Miami, FL 33132
USA
Royal Caribbean International RCI is a Norwegian and American cruise line brand based in Miami, Florida and owned
by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. With 22 ships in service, RCI controls a 17 per cent share of the world cruise mar-
ket. All ships under the Royal Caribbean International brand have names ending on “of the Seas” since 1991.
Sister brands are:
• Celebrity Cruises, since 1997 • Azamara, since 2007
• Pullmantur Cruises, since 2006 • CDF Croisieres de France, since 2008
Island Cruises was the brand name of a cruise line operated by Sunshine Cruises Limited, founded as a joint
venture between Royal Caribbean Cruises and First Choice Travel plc. In 2008, Royal Caribbean sold its stake in
the company to TUI. Island Escape was transferred to Thomson Cruises, and Island Star is now L’Horizon of
CDF Croisieres de France. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line was established in 1968 by three Norwegian shipping lines:
• Anders Wilhelmsen • I.M. Skauge • Gotaas Larsen
A year later, Song of Norway Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s first ship, was put into service, followed by Nordic
Prince in 1971 and Sun Viking in 1972. In 1988 Royal Caribbean and Admiral Cruises merged. Anders Wilhelmsen
gained full ownership and entered into a joint venture ownership with the Pritzker family (owners of the Hyatt hotel
chain), and the Ofer family from Israel and the UK (owners of one of the largest shipping lines in the world). After
going public in 1993, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line changed its name to Royal Caribbean International, to
reflect its global operation and itineraries. As the company grew, five classes of cruise ships were developed:
• The Sovereign Class • The Voyager Class • The Freedom Class • The Project Sunshine Class
• The Vision Class • The Radiance Class • The Genesis (Oasis) Class
All these unique breeds of innovative cruise ships carry the handwriting of cruise gurus like Richard D. Fain, Harri
U. Kulovaara and Kelly Gonzales. The second largest cruise line in the world has ordered a brand new class of ships,
dubbed “Project Sunshine” at Meyer Werft in Germany. Plus an option for another two ships of the same class.
Beginning of 2013, RCI confirmed that STX France was awarded the order for the third Oasis class cruise ship.
The cruise industry in general and Royal Caribbean in particular is embracing the importance of interior design
aboard its ships and the importance to remain chic is ever present. The new Sunshine Class is reflective of this new
trend. Therefore a handful of spaces on the new Sunshine class ships will remain “white spaces” until the last
moment so that Royal Caribbean can respond to the latest trends. Royal Caribbean has an in-house department
that specializes in the design of new ships called “Fleet Design and Newbuild”. It is also involved in ship upgrades.
The new Project Sunshine class ship design is being headed by Executive Vice President Harri U. Kulovaara and
chief designer Kelly Gonzalez. The design process involves the Operations, Marketing and Executive Steering Com-
mittee divisions of Royal Caribbean. The Executive Steering committee is made up of Adam Goldstein, Richard Fain
and Harri Kulovaara.

Thomson Cruises
c/o TUI UK Ltd.
Wigmore House
Wigmore Lane
Luton, LU2 9TN
United Kingdom, Europe
Thomson Holidays is a UK based travel operator and part of TUI Travel plc. The company (originally named
Thomson Tour Operations, and renamed in 1997) was founded as part of the Thomson Travel Group (TTG) in 1965
following the acquisition of three package holiday travel agencies and the airline Britannia Airways by Roy
Thomson. The Thomson Travel Group was owned by the Thomson Corporation of Canada until it was floated on the
London Stock Exchange in 1998. Thomson UK is headquartered in Luton, England.
TTG was acquired by Preussag AG, an industrial and transportation conglomerate. Preussag was renamed TUI
AG on July 1, 2002 and Thomson Travel Group became TUI UK. Thomson Holidays also operates its own cruise
line, Thomson Cruises, that offers low-price cruises around Europe with ships from Louis Cruise Lines and Holland
America Line. The company had initially entered the cruise market in 1973, but due to rising fuel costs the venture
was terminated in 1976. In 1995, Thomson restarted their cruise line after their competitor Airtours had made a suc-
cessful entry in the cruise business under their Sun Cruises brand. Thomson Cruises holds approximately a 1% mar-
ket share of the worldwide cruise industry Two cruise ships – Thomson Dream and Thomson Celebration – are in
the process of getting their multimillion – pound refit in order to bring them to TUI’s Platinum Collection level.
Five crew members have been killed, and a further three injured on February 10, 2013 after a lifeboat fell into the
sea during a routine emergency drill on board the Thomson Majesty operated by UK-based Thomson Cruises, while
docked in La Palma, Canary Islands. The 1992-built ship is owned by Cyprus-based Louis Cruises and leased to
Thomson.
The launching of lifeboats is extremely dangerous due to a faulty design principle and a primitive construction.
This accident gives another proof that the system does not work. Not even in calm waters and no stress at all.
Experience teaches us that more people are dying in lifeboat drills than are being saved by lifeboats. It’s that serious!
Hundred years after Titanic the flag states and the IMO should start to seriously tackle this problem! Not to forget
CLIA.

variety of business problems.
Unlike charter air travel to Cuba, which is permitted from Miami, New York and Los Angeles and recently got approval
from other U.S. airports, the United States has not approved charter ferry travel to the communist nation.
The ferries would be the kind that are common in Europe, with tall upper decks that resemble cruise ships and carry
up to 1,500 passengers at two decks that could hold 600 cars.

Viking River Cruises, a global corporation based in the United States, was established in 1997 by a Scandinavian
and Dutch consortium with the purchase of four Russian ships. In 2000, Viking acquired KD River Cruises
(Köln- Düsseldorfer Rheinschifffahrt) with all the on-shore assets, resulting in becoming the largest fleet of river
cruise vessels in the world. As a result of additional purchases and new builds, Viking River Cruises in 2012
operated a fleet of 31 ships with nearly 5 000 berths. This unprecedented expansion – no doubt – bears the per-
sonal handwriting of Torsten Hagen. Educated at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (SINTEF) and Harvard
Business School, Hagen has served not only in Royal Viking Line, but also on the board of Holland America Line
and Kloster Cruises.
The board of directors of Viking River Cruises includes prominent investors and financial leaders with a strong
background in the cruise and shipping industry. To name only a few: Torstein Hagen, Charles Duro, Robert
Ehrnrooth, George Loudon, Nitin Mehta, and Christer Salen. One of Hagen’s early backers in the river boat
venture was Nico van der Vorm, a former owner of Holland America Line. Today’s strongest supporter is Christer
Salen, Swedish shipowner and yachtsman. George Loudon serves as Non-Executive Director of Viking River
Cruises being himself an Executive of Cambridge Capital Partners, a private equity firm. Loudon’s background is in
management consultancy and banking in Holland and London, where he worked among others for McKinsey,
Midland Montagu, Altius Holding, Pall Mall Capital, and the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, while Nitin Metha is a di-
rector of 123Signup AMS. Inc, an internet software company based in San Jose, California.
Viking River Cruises placed an order in 2012 for 10 additional Viking Longships bringing the total number of new
ships launching in 2013 to 10 and the number launching in 2014 to eight. The launch plan will surpass the
industry record Viking set in 2012 with the introduction of six new ships in a single season. By the end of 2014 the
company will have introduced a total of 24 new ships in a three-year period.
Viking plans to inaugurate the first eight Viking Longships of 2013 in a simultaneous christening ceremony in late
March in Amsterdam. The two newest ships, Viking Baldur and Viking Magni, will join the fleet in late August and
September, respectively. The new ships will be built at the Neptun Yard in Germany, part of the Meyer Neptun
Group.

Viking Ocean Cruises is a sister-line to Viking River Cruises, an international company headquartered in Woodland
Hills, California, USA and Basel, Switzerland that operates a fleet of 31 river cruising vessels worldwide. The man

behind Viking Ocean Cruises is none other than Torstein Hagen, a cruise veteran of special significance. The
company’s name may give the impression that this is a new entrant into the luxury cruise sector. But Viking Ocean
Cruises has its roots in Royal Viking Line, an upmarket cruise line that operated from 1972 until 1998. This
company was the brain child of Warren Titus and from 1980 onwards managed by Torstein Hagen as Chief
Executive Officer, when it was purchased first by Kloster/Norwegian Caribbean Line and then by Cunard Line, which
eventually amalgamated the ships into its own fleet. In other words: Viking Ocean Cruises essentially is a relaunch
of Royal Viking Line led by the founder Torstein Hagen, founder and chairman of Viking River Cruises!
The recent investment in the luxury segment of the cruise industry - four 48 000 ton, 944 passenger ships ordered
from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri - is outdistancing Seabourn’s three-ship construction in the years 2009 – 2011.
The first two of the Viking ships will be launched in 2015 and early 2016, followed by two more sister-vessels. This
opportunistic investment would not have materialized without massive funding by the Italian government-sponsored
programme Export Banca - a scheme set up by the Italian Export Credit Agency SACE Servizi Assicurativi del
Commercio Estero , Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and SIMEST Societa’ Italiana per Imprese all’Estero – to support
Italy’s exports.
