Observation of A Child
You will show evidence of your understanding in the area of Child Development by showing evidence that
demonstrates your skills and abilities in the following competencies:
Assignment:
1. You will select a child that is 3, 4 or 5 years old to follow over a period of time (2 months or more.)
Hopefully, you have already been observing a child as part of your work as a preschool teacher or
during your coursework in a Child Development or Practicum course. You may add to these
existing observations.
2. Observe the child each day and make observations on note cards or in a journal. Observations must
be made using objective language. You should have an ample collection of observations (40-60)
using a variety of methods over a period of time (2 months or more.) Each observation should
include:
a. the date and time
b. the content of the observation/anecdote or running record
c. the developmental domain
This portion of the assignment will not be collected or assessed as part of the course. You will be are
encouraged and reminded to collect 10 -15 observations each week but they are to be included in your
final Portfolio, not submitted through Blackboard. However, you will be submitting the items in the
next section of the assignment so you will need to keep up with your required observations to make
that possible.
3. Observations should be summarized in some way and include analysis of childs development and
summary of childs progress over the time of the observations. You will show your ability to
provide an interpretation of the child by creating:
a. a specific running record of one observation due 7/30
b. analysis of developmental skills in each domain (use information on developmental
milestones) due 7/30
c. a summary of the childs overall development and progress due 7/30
