THE NOUN
1. Numarul substantivelor
Numarul substantivelor reprezinta forma pe care o ia un substantiv pentru a arata ca ne
referim la unul sau mai multe obiecte sau fiinte.
Singularul este forma de baza a unui substantiv: dog, girl, wife, world, storm (furtuna)
Pluralul regulat al substantivelor se formeaza prin adaugarea unui s la forma de
singular:
- Ex.: cat+s = cats (pisici), day+s = days (zile), world+s = worlds (lumi)
Pluralul substantivelor teminate n: ch, o, sh, s, x; se formeaza adaugnd es la singular:
- Ex.: church+es = churches (biserici), bush+es = bushes (tufisuri), class+es = classes
(clase), potato+es = potatoes (cartofi),box+es = boxes (cutii)
Pluralul neregulat: Sunt unele substantive care formeaza forma de plural neregulata.
Substantive terminate n consoana+y formeaza pluralul cu ies:
Ex.: company - companies (companii), factory - factories (fabrici), baby babies (bebelusi)
Unele substantive terminate n o fac plural prin adaugarea unui s:
Ex.: soprano - sopranos (soprane), piano - pianos (piane), photo - photos
(fotografii)
Unele substantive terminate n f sau fe vor avea la plural schimbarea n ves:
Ex.: leaf - leaves (frunze), half - halves (jumatati), wife - wives, life - lives
(vieti), self - selves (insine), wolf - wolves (lupi)
Exceptii: roof - roofs (acoperisuri), handkerchief - handkerchiefs (batiste), gulf - gulfs
(golfuri, prapastii), wharf - wharfs/ wharves (debarcadere)
Cteva substantive formeaza pluralul prin schimbarea unei vocale interne:
Ex.: foot - feet (picioare [talpa]), man - men (barbati), tooth - teeth (dinti)
Pluralul substantivului child (copil) este children. (copii).
Unele substantive ramn la fel si pentru plural:
Ex.: aircraft (avion, avioane), deer (caprioara, caprioare), series (serie, serii),
sheep (oaie, oi), species (specie, specii), fish (peste, pesti)
Pluralul substantivelor compuse
n cazul substantivelor compuse numai ultimul cuvnt va trece la plural.
Ex.: boy-friends (iubiti), break-ins (spargeri), travel agents (agentii de turism)
Exceptii: substantivele compuse al caror prim element este man sau woman vor forma
pluralul pentru ambele substantive componente.
Ex.: men drivers (soferi), women teachers (profesoare), men servants (servitori)
n cazul substantivelor compuse formate din constructii de genul substantiv +
prepozitie / adverb + substantiv, doar substantivul de baza va primi semnul pluralului.
Ex.: sisters-in-law, passers-by, men-of-war, hangers-on, lookers-on, runners-up
Abrevierile sau initialele vor forma pluralul prin adaugarea unui s:
Ex.: MPs (Members of Parliament), VIPs (very important persons)
2. Substantivele unice (uncountable nouns)
Substantivele unice sunt cele care in engleza nu se numara (uncountable) deoarece
reprezinta unicate sau obiecte puternic individualizate, ori notiuni abstracte.
35
Nume de substante - bread (paine), coffee (cafea), gold (aur), pepper (piper), glass
(sticla), oil (ulei, petrol), stone (piatra), wood (lemn).

(citire), luggage (bagaje), parking (parcare), weather (vreme).
3. Forma posesiva
Pentru a exprima posesiunea unui substantiv, se foloseste Forma posesiva a
substantivului, care se formeaza in diferite moduri.
- La forma de singular a substantivelor care nu se termina n s se adauga 's :
Ex.: a child's voice (vocea unui copil), the people's choice (alegerea oamenilor), a
dog's mouth (gura unui caine), women's clothes (haine de /pt. femei)
- Cu formele de plural ale substantivelor care se termina n s se foloseste doar apostroful
(') :

- Numele proprii terminate n s vor primi fie doar apostrof ('), fie 's :
Ex.: Mr Jones's / Mr Jones' car (masina domnului John), Yeats's / Yeats' poems

sotie a lui Henry)

INTERIM EVAL 1
PART 1 - Reading Comprehension
Hot dog eating champion retains title after tiebreaker
Friday, July 4, 2008
For the second year in a row, American competitive eater Joey Chestnut defeated his Japanese
rival Takeru Kobayashi at the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York City, after a tie
forced a five-hot-dog eat-off to be held.
After ten minutes of hot dog eating, two shorter than in previous years, Chestnut and Kobayashi
were tied at 59 frankfurters. But after the rare tiebreaker, 24-year-old Chestnut emerged as the winner,
claiming a $10,000 prize and a mustard-yellow belt. "It was crazy," he said. "I'm just a normal guy eating
hot dogs on the Fourth. You can't overcomplicate it."
Kobayashi, whose loss last year shattered a six-year winning streak, said that a sore jaw and a
tooth problem may have altered his performance. "If I put one more mouthful in, I could have won", the
30-year-old Nagano native said through a translator. "I lost because I wasn't quick enough in the
rematch."
This year, the 22 competitors were under a 10-minute time limit, unlike the 12 minutes used for
previous contests. The reason for this, according to Nathan's, was the discovery of a document from 1916,
which revealed that the original competition was 10 minutes long.
Thousands gathered at Coney Island to watch the annual event, which has become one of the more
colorful traditions of America's Independence Day.
