Orange Hires Pasqualoni as Head Football Coach

(ORANGE, from Page A-l)
"I worked jft being lousy," he
said.
But he also worked at being a
coach, his greatest ambition.
"I was a guy who was very happy
to be there and lucky because I
knew when I went there that I
wanted to be a coach," Pasqualoni said. "What I used to do during
games was get in Coach Paterno's
way a lot just to hear what he was
saying and figure out what was
going on."
Pasqualoni, a native of Connecticut, began his coaching career as an
assistant at Cheshire (Conn.) High
School, then served stints at Southern Connecticut State and Western
Connecticut State. He had a 34-17
record as a head coach, including a
10-1 mark in 1985.
Pasqualoni came to Syracuse in
1987 as a linebackers coach and
has coached the position since.
Players know him as one of the'
staff's most intense individuals.
While he won't be caught dead
without a tie on around the office,
Pasqualoni turns into a fiercely
motivated coach on the practice
field.
Players refer to him as Coach P,
but he's also been called Coach Psycho.
"At West Virginia, when Glenn
(Young) and I were watching 'Psycho IV,' " redshirt freshman linebacker Dan Conley said, "he (Pasqualoni) was in the room and he left,
and Glenn looked at me and said
There goes Psycho V.' "
Pasqualoni said he was "a little
nervous and still in a bit of shock" as
he met with reporters.
Pasqualoni was Crouthamel's
choice all along. The SU athletic
director said he went to New
Orleans, where the coaching staff
was attending a convention, with
the idea of hiring Pasqualoni to
replace MacPherson.
After a seven-hour "exercise" of
interviewing each member of the
coaching staff Monday, an exercise
in which coaches and administration
shared frank thoughts about the
direction of the program, Crouthamel said his decision became clear.
"As I went through that process,
it became more obvious to me and
reassuring to me that the guy on

very, very surprised, very
grateful ~ it's just
overwhelming."

our staff who was clearly the heir

apparent was Paul Pasqualoni,"
Crouthamel said.
By Tuesday morning Crouthamel
had made his decision, and by
Wednesday morning Pasqualoni
was being introduced before the
Syracuse media as the 26th head
coach of the Orangemen.
"I'm in shock," Pasqualoni said.
"I'm just very, very, very surprised, very grateful ... it's just
overwhelming."
When asked about his contract,
Pasqualoni said he didn't know any
details: "I'm so naive, I don't even
know there's contracts."
Crouthamel said he never interviewed anyone outside the program
for the job, not George O'Leary of
Georgia Tech and not Jim Hofher of
Cornell. Crouthamel said he had a
couple of outside candidates in
mind, but only if his initial plan to
pursue Pasqualoni ran into trouble.
It didn't.
Crouthamel said he wanted to
keep the job in-house to have continuity, a word that came up repeatedly during Pasqualom's news conference. In the end, a source said
Pasqualoni became the "compromise choice," possibly to keep
offensive coordinator George
DeLeone from joining MacPherson's staff in New England.
"They all," Crouthamel said of
the SU assistant coaches, "got an
equal look. Obviously, you go in
with preconceived notions; everything isn't equal. People are different. Personalities are different.
Experiences are different. So I did
go w i t h some preconceived
notions."
CFOuthamel said Syracuse is getting exactly what it needs, a coach
the players already know, a coach
who knows the program, a coach
who can pull together recruiting,

and a coach who can keep a good

portion of the staff from bolting to
New England.
Pasqualoni met with the players
following his news conference, then
awaited the return of Syracuse
assistants from New Orleans.' A
staff meeting is planned for 7 this
morning, when Pasqualoni should
get a better idea of who plans to
stay and who'plans to leave.
Aside from the urgency in getting the program running again,
Pasqualoni takes over one of the
city's highest profile positions.

Pasqualoni also said he had no

intention of being another Coach
Mac, something Crouthamel said
was impossible, anyway.
"I probably won't drink as much
coffee," Pasqualoni said. "I'm going
to be me."
MacPherson declined to appear
at Pasqualoni's news conference
Wednesday. Sports information
director Larry Kimball said MacPherson didn't want to take away
from Pasqualoni's day.
And what a day it was. While
troubled swirled around what

with the uncertainty over the

coaching staff and recruiting
Pasqualoni managed to take a step
back and realize a dream had come
true.
"Bear Bryant once said that timing in life is every thing,", Pasqualoni
said. "And last night, it kind of hit
me as to exactly what that meant.
We've been to the Sugar Bowl, the
Hall of Fame Bowl, the Peach Bowl;
we've been to Hawaii, the Kickoff
Classic; we've been to Japan, and
now I get to be the head coach. It's a
dream. It really is."
