your information into the masses of information that I have gathered
through the years on the Babcock families. I was hoping that your
letter might contain some Answers for me but it has only added to my
confusion because my notes indicate that David had a son Benjamin
who was alive at the time of the will. See App "A" item 3.
I have accumulated from the Upper Canada Land Petitions
held here at the Public Archives of Canada brief extracts of over 100
petitions etc in the name of Babcock. I have spent hundreds of hours
trying to answer the many riddles that these petitions present.
I keep asking myself questions such as : Who is Mercy Babcock, widow
of David ? App "A" item 15? Which David Babcock is the father of
Benjamin, is the one who died early, or the father of Belnap and Darius,
(see App "A" Item 2 and IS) who appears to have been alive as late as
Good Hunting,

APPENDIX D
EXTRACT FROM ALBANY NEWSPAPER, MAY 26, I 783*
As Hannibal swore never to be at Peace with the Romans, so let every Whig sware
by the abhorence of Slavery- by the liberty and religion by the Shades of those departed Fri
ends who have
fallen in battle by the ghosts of those our Brethren who have been destroyed on
board of Prisonships and in loathsome dungeons ... by everything that a freeman holds dear neve
r to be at peace
with those fiends the Refugees, whose thefts, murders, and treasons, have filled
the cup of woe;
but shew the world that we prefer War, with all it's dreadful calamities, to giv
ing those self
destroyers of the human species a residence among us. We have crimsoned the eart
h with our
blood to purchase peace, therefore are determined to enjoy harmony uninterrupted
with the
Contaminating breath of a Tory.
At a meeting of the Inhabitants of the District of Saratoga (in the County of Al
bany) held on
Tuesday the 6th day of May, 1783, the following Resolutions were unanimously vot
ed, and
ordered to be published in the New York Gazetteer.
Whereas, in the course of the late glorious contest for liberty and independence
, many
persons residing in this, and other of the United States, regardless of their du
ty, have basely
deserted the cause of their country, and voluntarily joined the Enemy, thereof,
to aid and assist
in subjugating it to tyrany and slavery. And progressing from one species of vil
lany [sic] to
another, these diabolical/miscreants, became the voluntary instruments of those
barbarous
Massacres in which neitner age, or sex, or condition were spared, and in which t
he horrid
spectacle was exhibited; of harmless infants expiring on the mangled bodies of t
heir butchered
Parents. And Whereas, wretches so disgraced with infamy and Crimes, ought not to
participate
P.A.C., Haldimand Transcripts, B. 103, pp. 183-84. This was mentioned by Captain
William Potts of the 8th Regiment as having been seen at Fort Niagara. A month l
ater, June 7,
1783, the inhabitants of Harpersfield, Kortright, Cherry Valley, and other settl
ements in the
Conajoharie District met at Fort Plain and passed six resolutions of the same pu
rport which are
quoted in William L. Stone, Life of Joseph Brant-Thayendanegea including the Ind
ian Wars of
the American Revolution (2 vols., Cooperstown, N.Y., 1845), II, Appendix V.
