PROCESS ANALYTICS TECHNOLOGY

At a glance
Todays operations are complex, matrixed, and
often fragmented. They have outgrown the
explanatory ability of traditional management
tools. As a result, many transformation efforts
struggle, organizational dynamics are sometimes
dysfunctional, and effectivenessas well as people
engagementmay be suboptimal.

collaborates because they dont know or interact

with the majority of the people directly. Decoding
the hidden signals by mapping and analyzing
interactions between people and larger groups
within and outside the organization can help predict
the effectiveness of teams, groups, and businesses.
It can also drive sustainable change.
Information flows across networked eco-systems

Genpact leverages powerful tools such as network

analytics to identify hidden power structures and
collaboration behaviors and evaluate whether they
are aligned to the organizations need, whether it is
transformation or routine operations. They can be
applied to internal groups, as well as to the extended
enterprise, including partners and large clients.
This unprecedented, strategic operational analysis
builds on MIT research and our 15 years of
experience designing, transforming, and running
global process operations.

The challenge
Organizations are becoming increasingly global
and complex not only through global dispersion
of employees but also through more intensive
connections with suppliers and partners within
their eco-system. Studies have shown that more
than 70% of employees in large organizations are
disengaged with their work.1 These conditions have a
significant impact on organizational productivity and
effectiveness, and make the diagnosis of issues very
complex for senior leaders seeking to maximize the
effectiveness of global operations without increasing
their cost. Visibility into how teams collaborate and
work actually happens is key but often difficult to
achieve. Even if all teams were co-located, which is
rarely the case, visibility is often limited to formal
organizational charts, communication channels,
and defined processes. This is especially acute in
large, complex, matrixed, and global organizations.
Intelligence is often available in pockets, and
leaders cant see how the entire organization

Genpact solution
Genpacts Operations Network Analytics
solution provides an unprecedented look into
the clients operational core and seeks to guide
transformational impact. The solution harnesses big
data and combines proprietary data sets related to
performance and effectiveness with social network
analytics (SNA) metrics developed at MITs
Center for Collective Intelligence by sifting through
millions of data sets. It leverages interaction traces
(typically email, excluding email body for privacy
but also possibly other sources such as calendars
and other communication tools).

At the division, department, job type, and person

level, it helps answers three key questions:
1. Who are the key influencers? Who are central in
the network?
2. How do they behave? Do they contribute to the
discussions or filter them? Do they regiment
work or assume a collaborative or creative
work style? Do they respond fast? What is the
sentiment of their conversations?
3. And, most importantly, are those actual
behaviors and structures appropriate for what
your operations are trying to achieve, and in line
with how theyre supposed to be?

The results shed light on otherwise invisible
communication behaviors that transcend
organizational structures and fixed workflow.
