ANTHRO 10 ARTICLE DISCUSSION

FIRST PREMISE - Social Interaction - hardwired into the human being, not socializaiton - Kailangan ng others para makapag-grow = social interaction is equal to growth - Humanity won't be developed without others - Durkheim: ang society raw ay isang organism, isang "biological phenomenon" ("not a nominal being created by reason, but a system of active forces.") na na-develop over time (evolutionary process) implies powers of sensory awareness, and communication between individuals within the social organism - Society = binubuo ng mga taong nangangailangan ng social interaction para umusbong/mag-"grow" - Hindi acquired/socialized sa mga tao ang social interaction -- biologically programmed/natural na 'yun sa atin, innate ability na sa atin para makisalamuha sa ibang tao Hindi natin tinututunan kung paano makipaginteract sa isa't isa bilang natural na nga lang daw 'yun para sa atin - Pero may mga certain factors that can affect yung pagiging pare-pareho ng mga ability natin (e.g. sex, people na nakaka-interact, environment). So in a way yung mga masyadong magagaling eh pwedeng tawaging abnormal. :)) Combination of 1st and 2nd premise: - Kelangan ng normal human ang isa't-isa para matawag na human. Through interactions with other people eh we can learn and develop certain abilities. - Example: si person A ay tamad mag-aral. tapos na-meet nya si person B na super sipag mag-aral. then naging friends sila and halos lagi silang magkasama everyday. so, chances are either magiging masipag mag-aral si person A or magiging tamad mag-aral si person B or pwede din mangyari both. THIRD PREMISE -Combination ng 2 premises, that because of the need of others and ability of body, common na ang mostly lahat ng non-verbal body language -Ability ng tao na makipag usap through pakikiramdam -examples: 1. hugging someone to denote love, and other keme 2. pag-sigh/pagbuntong-hininga to signify... pagka-irita? disappointment? haggardness 3. pag-tap ng feet/fingers = pagka-inip 4. scratching of head = cluelessness (slow), angst (fast) 5. snapping of fingers = looking for a certain word, missed something, "sayang" feeling 6. 1 quick clap = "sayang" feeling FOURTH PREMISE - Inseparable ang mind and body. May nag-eexist nga lang na dichotomy between them na nagsisymbolize ng pagkakaiba ng left and rightbrain functions. Some professions may value

SECOND PREMISE - Somatic state = Kakayanan ng Katawan (bodily condition) - Competence and performance = Kakayananang gawin nang bongga vs. Kakayanan gawin - Lahat ng normal human pare-parehas ng kayang gawin ( "Human behavior is an extension of the possibilities that are contained in the body.."

mental over manual labor, and vice versa. * Left Hemisphere - analytic thinking, language and logic, sequential processing of information * Right Hemisphere - space orientation, artistic talents, body awareness, facial recognition - The arts serve as mediators between manual and mental labor. Magagamit din sila para ma-activate yung parehong hemisphere ng brain. Kumbaga pang-unleash tsaka pang-maximize ng potential. MAHALAGA ANG ART. - Feelings, fellow-feeling particularly (movements of bodies in space and time often without verbal connotations), as basis of mental life. Yung art nagseserve siya na effective means of communication kasi na-sistimulate niya yung fellow-feeling, plus na-eencourage niya na gamitin ng tao yung mental and physical faculties niya. EXAMPLE: Acheulean tools if these are evidences of a "new way of thinking", this also connotes new ways of feeling and moving the body More than function, we look at their form that exhibits a sense of aesthetics or artistry of early humans -> concentration and repeated body movements, continuity of style - Gregory Bateson: Unaided by art (includes dreams and the like), consciousness can never appreciate the systemic nature of mind. - The essential function of the artistic process is to mediate between the impermanent and permanent in man to capture the force of feeling with forms that must always begin as extensions of the body. - The study of nonverbal behavior aka extensions of the body in culture reveal patterns of interaction between social bodies and their environment that go beyond socio-economic realities.

FIRST PREMISE (15 mins) - GROUPING = Give classmates instructions to find their new groups (Three groups) - Each will be given strips of paper with the following PERSONALITY TRAITS: Masayahin, Iyakin, Gutumin - Everyone is allowed to act out their actions and speak and talk to classmates. Announcing their group name is NOT allowed - First group to group together within 5 minutes gets a point Speakers: Polyn, Renz SECOND PREMISE (15 mins) - EATING CONTEST = Chubby Anthropology - Ask group to send 2 hungry group mates - Each pair will be fed two pieces of marshmallow then will be asked to say "Chubby Anthropology" - Every round they will be fed 1 more piece of marshmallow, then will also be asked to say the phrase - The game will end once only one pair can say "Chubby Anthropology" Speakers: Rosemarie, Geordan THIRD PREMISE (15 mins) - PAINT ME A PICTURE - Ask the group to send 3 observant group mates who are willing to step outside - Reporters will instruct the remaining people inside to act out/depict a scene/situation. Anne: And now, the third premise. It is the combination of the 2 premises. Benjo: Nonverbal forms of interaction assume a very great significance in this premise. Anne: The Anthropology of the body seeks body movements from verbal associations. Benjo: In this, the body reacts to the relationship of the species and its environment at the same time and place. Anne: And for better understanding of the third premise, we have prepared some examples and activities. Samples (Through Powerpoint) 1. Hugging 2. Sigh 3. Tapping of fingers 4. Scratching of head 5. Snapping of fingers 6. 1 quick clap 7. Stomping feet Activity PAINT ME A PICTURE 1. SADNESS - Funeral - Flood - Loved One's Departure 2. HAPPINESS - Party - Promotion - The girl you are courting finally said Yes. 3. ANGER - Third Party : Wife's reaction to husband
