EXPERIMENTNO:______ DATE:________

AIM :TO TEST THE PERFORMANCE OF DC SERIES

GENERATOR

OBJECTIVES:

After performing this experiment you will be able to;

- Measure the effect of change of load current on the
Terminal Voltage of dc series generator at constant
speed.
- Determine experimentally external and internal
characteristics of a dc series generator.
- Calculate the induced emf in the generator at various
values of the load current.
- Know its application.

MACHINE SPECIFICATION:

APPRATUS:

SSr.No. DESCRIPTION SPECIFICATION RREQ.QTY.

THEORY :

- The curve showing the relation between the armature

current(Ia) and emf (E) is the internal characteristic and the
curve showing the relation between load current (Ia) and
terminal voltage (Vt) is the external characteristic of dc series
generator.
- In dc series generator Ia = IL = Ise and its series field flux
Ǿse α Ise α IL up to saturation of pole core.
- Here, when load current IL is zero the generated emf and
terminal voltage have some value due the cutting of residual
flux by the armature conductors rotating at constant speed.
- Now in this generator E α Ǿse at constant speed if the load
on the generator armature will increase, the load current I L
increase. The Ǿse α Ise α ILwill increase. As a result the
generated emf E α Ǿse will also increase. At certain value of
load current the flux in the pole will saturate and emf will be
maximum.
Vt = E – Drops will also increase if there is further increase
in the load current IL the generated emf remains constant as
the magnetic field is saturated. But the terminal voltage will
reduce because of increase in voltage drop.

PRECAUTIONS:

1. Load on the generator should not exceed its rated

value.
2. Speed of the generator should be maintained
constant.
PROCEDURE :

1.Connect Set up the circuit as shown in figure.

Keep the rheostat mini. Position of start 3 – point starter.
2.Take the reading of terminal voltage Vt and load current IL
and field voltage Vf at NO load.
3. Now gradually increase the load & take the reading & V t, IL,Vf,
the NO Load & Full Load.
4.Calculate the emf generated for each reading.

5.Draw the characteristic graph

.
