ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT ON READING

SY 2023-2024

I. RATIONALE

CNHS’s reading activities for the S.Y. 2023-2024 were initiated with a clear vision: to enhance the
literacy skills of students, foster a love for reading, and ultimately improve their overall academic
performance. Recognizing that reading is the foundation of learning across all subjects, the program aimed
to provide students with the necessary tools and motivation to become proficient readers. With the conduct
of the Phil-IRI and implementation of Catch-up Fridays as reading intervention program, these initiatives
were particularly important given the wide range of reading abilities among our students, from those
struggling to meet grade-level expectations to those excelling and in need of more challenging materials.

The programs’ legal foundation is rooted in several key documents and laws in the Philippines. The
1987 Philippine Constitution, under Article XIV, Section 1, mandates the State to protect and promote the
right of all citizens to quality education at all levels. This constitutional guarantee underscores the
importance of literacy as a fundamental aspect of quality education. Furthermore, Republic Act No. 10533,
known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, strengthens the educational system by enhancing the
curriculum and increasing the number of years for basic education, emphasizing the development of literacy
and critical thinking skills. Additionally, Republic Act No. 10157, the Kindergarten Education Act,
establishes mandatory kindergarten education, recognizing the foundational role of early literacy. Various
Department of Education (DepEd) Orders, such as DepEd Order No. 45, series of 2002, which mandates the
implementation of the Every Child A Reader Program (ECARP), aim to make every Filipino child a reader
by Grade 3. These legal frameworks underscore the necessity of literacy programs to ensure that all students
develop the foundational skills required for lifelong learning and success.

II. OBJECTIVE

The conduct of the Phil-IRI and implementation of Catch-up Fridays as reading intervention
program aim to:

1. Utilize the Phil-IRI to accurately determine the reading proficiency of each student, identifying those
who require additional support and those ready for advanced reading materials.
2. Implement Catch-up Fridays as a focused intervention strategy to provide individualized support to
students identified by the Phil-IRI as needing improvement in reading comprehension and fluency.
3. Regularly track and assess the progress of students participating in Catch-up Fridays to ensure
continuous improvement and adjustment of instructional strategies.
4. Improve overall reading comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking skills among all students
through consistent, targeted support and intervention.
5. Foster a positive attitude towards reading by creating engaging and supportive reading activities
tailored to students' interests and needs.
6. Equip teachers with the necessary skills and strategies to effectively administer the Phil-IRI and
conduct Catch-up Fridays through professional development and training sessions.

i. Prepare and Submit Accomplishment Report

CNHS’s reading activities began with the administration of the Philippine Informal Reading
Inventory (Phil-IRI) to assess the reading levels of all students. This initial assessment provided baseline
data, revealing a wide range of reading abilities and helping to identify students in need of additional
support. Throughout the program, ongoing assessments were conducted to track progress and adjust
instructional strategies accordingly.

One of the core activities was "Catch-up Fridays," a weekly session dedicated to providing targeted
support to students who were lagging behind in their reading skills. During these sessions, teachers worked
closely with small groups of students, focusing on individualized instruction and remedial activities
designed to improve their reading comprehension and fluency.

In addition to these targeted interventions, the program featured regular reading workshops. These
interactive sessions focused on various aspects of reading, including comprehension strategies, vocabulary
building, and fluency exercises. To make reading more engaging, community members and local authors
were invited as guest readers, providing students with exposure to diverse reading materials and styles.

The Language club was also established to foster a collaborative language learning environment.
This club was organized to cater to varied interests related to language learning.

Parental involvement was a crucial component of the program. Workshops were organized to educate
parents on how to support their children’s reading at home, and reading nights were held to bring families
together for literacy activities.

IV. ISSUES AND CONCERNS

Despite the program's successes, several issues and concerns arose. One major challenge was the
significant disparities in reading levels among students. To address this, differentiated instruction and small
group interventions were implemented to cater to individual needs during the weekly implementation of
Catch-up Fridays. Another concern was the limited access to a diverse range of books and reading materials.
Teacher-made reading materials and donations from local government units helped expand the school's
reading material inventory.

Maintaining student interest and motivation in reading activities was another challenge. To combat this,
the program incorporated a variety of engaging and interactive reading activities and provided incentives for
reaching reading milestones.

V. REPORT ON ASSESSMENT

The initial administration of the Phil-IRI revealed a wide range of reading abilities among students, with
some significantly below grade level. This baseline data was crucial for identifying students in need of
additional support and developing individualized reading plans. The final assessment demonstrated
significant overall improvement in reading skills, with most students reaching or exceeding their reading
goals. Qualitative feedback from students, parents, and teachers highlighted increased enthusiasm for
reading, a testament to the program's effectiveness.

VI. SUGGESTIONS/RECCOMENDATIONS

To ensure the continued success and sustainability of the School Reading Program, several
recommendations are proposed. Firstly, it is essential to sustain the program with ongoing funding and

resources, including digital resources and e-books to cater to diverse reading preferences. Secondly, regular
professional development for teachers should be provided, focusing on the latest reading instruction
strategies and interventions. Hosting workshops to share best practices among educators would further
enhance the program's effectiveness.

Enhanced parental involvement is also recommended. Offering more frequent workshops and resources
to support reading at home, as well as improving communication channels between the school and parents,
will ensure that parents are actively engaged in their child’s literacy development. Finally, continuously
updating the school library with a wide variety of books that reflect diverse cultures, interests, and reading
levels is crucial. Involving students in the selection of new books will help keep the library relevant and
engaging.

In conclusion, The conduct of the Phil-IRI and implementation of Catch-up Fridays as reading
intervention program have made significant strides in improving literacy among our students. With
continued support and strategic enhancements, the program’s success can be solidified, ensuring that all
students develop a lifelong love for reading.
