One of the big programming surprises of the 2002 summer TV series was a show on
the Fox Network called American Idol, a talent search that highlighted several aspiring
performers. The final episode of the show garnered the biggest audience share among 18-
to 49-year olds that the network has ever had. Based on a British series called Pop Idol,
American Idol is another in a long list of shows that the United States has imported.
In fact, many popular U.S. TV shows originated overseas. These include the quiz
shows Who Wants to Be A Millionaire and The Weakest Link, both also from Britain.
Other examples include Survivor, imported from Sweden; Big Brother, based on a Dutch
series of the same name; and TLC's Trading Spaces, based on the British series, Changing
Rooms.
Scientists are as obsessed with the question of why the super-old survive and thrive
as Ponce de leon was to find the fountain of youth. They want to understand why the
Japanese islands of Okinawa are home to the world's largest population of the
centenarians , with almost 600 of its 1.3 million inhabitants living into their second century-
many of them active and looking decades younger than their actual years. Like weekend
visitors on the summer ferry to Martha's vineyard, scientists and sociologist block the boats
to Sardinia and Nova scotia, Canada, to see why those craggy locales hide vast clusters of
the super-old.

Norwegian rescue officials said Sunday the wreckage of a Russian helicopter that
crashed with eight people onboard off the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard has been located
on the seabed. The Joint Rescue Coordination Center for northern Norway said that the Mi-
8 helicopter, which went down Thursday near the Svalbard settlement of Barentsburg, is
around two kilometers (one mile) east of Cape Heer at a depth of nearly 210 meters (about
685 feet). A Norwegian remote-controlled submarine was involved in the search, which
will now focus on the chopper's passengers. Russian authorities said earlier that the
helicopter belonged to Russian coal company Arktikugol but was operated by charter
company Konvers Avia. Yevgeny Saidov, head of the Russian emergencies ministry's
special group at the site, told news agency TASS that Russian remotely controlled
underwater vehicles would join the operation to survey the Mi-8 crash site. The helicopter
had been en route to Barentsburg, a coal-mining town of about 500 people, from the
Russian settlement of Pyramiden, carrying five crew members and three staff members
from Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. Under an international 1920 treaty,
Norway has sovereignty over Svalbard, which is 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of its
mainland. Other signatory countries of the treaty have rights to exploit its natural resources
at the archipelago, known also with its earlier name Spitzbergen.
In 776 B.C., the first Olympic Games were held at the foot of Mount Olympus to
honor the Greeks' chief god, Zeus. The warm climate for outdoor activities, the need for
preparedness in war, and their lifestyle caused the Greek to create competitive sports. Only
the elite and military could participate first, but later the games were open to all free Greek
males who had no criminal record. The Greeks emphasized physical fitness and strength in
then education of youth. Therefore, contests in running, jumping, discus and javelin
throwing, boxing, and horse and chariot racing were held in individual cities, and the
winners competed every four years at Mount Olympus. Winners were greatly honored by
having olive wreaths placed on their heads and having poems sung about their deeds.
Originally these contests were held as games of friendship, and any wars in progress were
halted to allow the games to take place. They also helped to strengthen bonds among
competitors and the different cities represented.

The most familiar speleothems (from the Greek word spelaion for the cave and
thema for deposit), the decorative dripstone features found in caves, are stalactites and
stalagmites. Stalactites hang downward from the ceiling of the cave and are formed as
drop after drop of water slowly trickles through crack on the cave roof. Stalagmites grow
upward from the floor of the cave, generally as a result of water dripping from an
overhead stalactite. A column forms when a stalactite and a stalagmite grow until they
join. A “curtain” or “drapery” begins to form on an inclined ceiling when drops of water
trickle along a slope.
Natural openings on the surface that lead to caves are called sinkholes. or swallow
holes. Streams sometimes disappear down these holes and flow through the cavern.
Rivers may flow from one mountain to another through a series of caves . Some caverns
have sinkholes in their floors. Water often builds up a rim of dripstone around the edge of
the hole. Dripping water often contains dissolved minerals as well as acid. These
minerals too will be deposited; and they may give rich coloring to the deposits. If
minerals in the water change, layers of different colors may be formed.

Horse owner who plan to breed one or more mares should have a working knowledge of
heredity and know how to care for breeding animals and foals. The number of mares bred
that actually conceive varies from about 40 to 85 percent, with the average running less
than 50 percent. Some mares that do conceive fail to produce living foals. This means
that, on average, two mares are kept a whole year to produce one foal, and even then,
some foals are disappointments from the standpoint of quality.
By careful selection, breeders throughout history have developed various kinds of horses
with a wide variety of characteristics to suit many different needs. The Great Horse of the
Middle Ages, for example was bred for size and strength to carry a heavily armored
knight. The massive horses of such breeds are often called “cold blooded.” The Arabs
bred lithe dessert horses that were small and swift. These animal are often referred to as
“hot blooded.” Cross-breeding of hot blooded and cold-blooded horses for certain
characteristics produced breeds ranging from riding horses to draft horses.
The Thoroughbred id considered by many to be high point of elegance and fine selective
breeding. Many person mistakenly apply the name Thoroughbred to any purebred horse.
But a Thoroughbred is a distinct breed of running horses that traces its ancestry through
the male line directly back to three Eastern stallions: the Byerly Turk, the Darley
Arabian, and the Godolphin Barb. For convenience the breeds of horses are often divided
into three major groups: (1) ponies, (2) heavy, or draft horses, and (3) light horses.
