Junior Scientist

Job title: Junior Scientist


Salary range: £24,000 - £28,000
Location: Egham/Silwood, Surrey (some remote working can be
considered on a case-by-case basis, but the main tasks will
be technical support on site)

Our Egham centre’s scope is extensive. It carries out around 70 projects each
year, which range from working to identify nematodes that are new to science
in Chile, to seeking natural enemies for Europe and North America’s most
invasive weeds.

 Contribute to weekend/holiday period watering of plants as part of a rota system within
the group, out of hours working may be required if need arises under a flexible hours
arrangement
 Adhere to CABI policies and procedures at the centre, including HR and Health and
Safety requirements, financial and project management procedures, risk management
and Intellectual Property Rights

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

 Proven ability to undertake scientific research and understand concepts of experimental


planning.
 Good laboratory practice skills and technical scientific experience
 Computer literacy, ability to work with the various computer programmes including the
Microsoft office suite
 Experience/knowledge in growing plants, handling insects and/or pathogens, field
working and evidence of dexterity desirable

Education & Qualifications:

 BSc or higher qualification in a biological science, preferably relating to botany,


entomology, ecology; MSc desirable

 Team player – Evidence of working effectively with a range of individuals at all levels
 Self-starter – Evidence of working independently, being self-motivated and looking to
continuously improve ways of working to a high standard. Able to meet strict deadlines
 Good time management – Ability to plan and prioritize own work.
 Quick learner- Ability to learn new techniques and apply to experimental work
 Good communicator – Ability to communicate effectively with team members, both
verbally and in writing and evidence of good interpersonal skills
 Valid driving licence desirable
