Percentile
Based on our activity what do you think is our topic for today?
Locating Percentiles Under the Normal Curve
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson. a. Find z-scores when probabilities are given; and
b. Locate percentiles under the normal curve
c. Demonstrate appreciation of understanding on how to solve
problems involving locating percentile under the normal curve.
C. Presenting examples/ instances of the “Convert me”
new lesson. Direction: Convert a percentage to a decimal.
1. 50% 1. 0.5
2. 45% 2. 0.45
3. 100% 3. 1
4. 18% 4. 0.18
5. 8% 5. 0.08
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing “Discover Me!”
new skills #1.
Percentile-is a measure of relative standing. It is descriptive
measure of the relationship of a measurement to the rest of the
data.
Example: In the test in Algebra you got a score of 82 and you want
to know how fared in comparison with your classmates. If your
teachers tells you that you scored at the 90th percentile, means that
90% of the grades were lower than yours and 10% were higher.
G. Finding practical applications of concepts The results of a nationwide aptitude test in mathematics are
and skills in daily living. normally distributed with an average of 80 and standard deviation
of 15. What is the percentile rank of a score 84?
How will you convert percentage into decimal form? By dividing it into 100
If the exact area is not available what are we going to do? We take the nearest value. Then, we look up the
corresponding z value in the Table of Areas Under
the Normal Curve or z-Table.
For Enrichment:
In her class in Accounting, Miss Kay told the students that they
need a grad in the top 10% of the class to get an A in a particular
test. In the standardization of the test, the mean was 70 and the
standard deviation was 12. Assuming that the grades will be
normally distributed, what must be the minimum grade needed to
be obtain an A?
