Empowering Students Through Perception

Responsible waste management practices benefit everyone, from individual
households to businesses and institutions, and schools are no exception. In fact,
schools play a vital role in fostering a culture of environmental awareness and
sustainability among future generations.
A 2015 study titled "A Study on Waste Disposal Practices" underscores the
ongoing challenge of waste disposal. Public awareness of the amount of waste
generated in homes and institutions remains low. This lack of awareness hinders the
implementation of effective waste management practices. Waste management,
however, is intricately linked to both technological advancements and social
development. As societies progress and waste generation becomes more complex,
innovative solutions and a shift in social attitudes are required to effectively address
this growing concern.
At Aurelio Arago Memorial National High School, a critical gap exists in
understanding student perceptions of the waste disposal practices implemented by the
Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG). Prior research in this area is non-
existent. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating student views on the
effectiveness of the SSLG's waste disposal programs. By capturing student

perspectives, the study hopes to gain valuable insights that can be used to develop
targeted interventions. These interventions, in turn, will contribute to improving the
overall effectiveness of the school's waste management system.
Students themselves have a legal responsibility to ensure a well-functioning
waste management system within their school. This legal responsibility translates
into a real opportunity for student empowerment. By actively participating in waste
management efforts, students develop a sense of ownership and accountability for
their environment. Schools that successfully integrate students into waste
management initiatives not only foster a sense of environmental responsibility but
also cultivate valuable skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership.
Schools are increasingly recognized as environmental role models within their
communities. Implementing efficient waste management systems is crucial to
fulfilling this responsibility. The diverse types of waste generated in schools present a
unique challenge. Paper and cardboard, for instance, make up a significant portion of
school waste. Recycling these materials offers numerous benefits, including cost
savings, resource conservation, and enhancing the school's eco-friendly image. By
prioritizing waste reduction, reuse, and recycling efforts, schools can significantly
reduce their environmental footprint and serve as a positive example for the wider
community.
Effective waste disposal is essential for maintaining a clean and healthy

This study will investigate student perceptions of the waste disposal
management practices implemented by the SSLG at Aurelio Arago Memorial
National High School. It will specifically address the following questions:
1. How do students perceive the implementation of waste disposal practices by
the Supreme Secondary Learner Government?
2. What values are promoted by Aurelio Arago Memorial National High
School regarding proper waste disposal?
This study aims to assess student perceptions of waste disposal management at
Aurelio Arago Memorial National High School. It will focus on:
1. Investigating student perceptions of how the Supreme Secondary Learner
Government implements waste disposal practices.
2. Identifying the values promoted by Aurelio Arago Memorial National High
School regarding proper waste disposal.
This study explores student perceptions of waste disposal management at
Aurelio Arago Memorial National High School, utilizing a method called photovoice.
Photovoice empowers participants to document their experiences and perspectives
through photography. This approach can be particularly insightful when investigating
social issues such as waste management. By analyzing student-generated

photographs, the study can gain a deeper understanding of student perceptions
regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the school's current waste disposal
practices.

student voices while acknowledging the limitations of a smaller sample size.
