Equality of Opportunity

Scholarship

The Actuarial Foundation of Canada (AFC) sponsors a variety of programs that improve the
mathematical skills and/or financial literacy of Canadian youth. Since its inception in 2003, the
AFC has helped young people who face challenges to become successful adults. It is in this spirit
that the AFC has established its Equality of Opportunity Scholarship (EOS) Fund.

THE SCHOLARSHIP

The EOS Fund provides scholarships to eligible Canadian students facing financial and
societal barriers to attending an eligible program at a college or university, as described
below:

(1) ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES: The EOS Fund is available to resident Black, Indigenous and
People of Colour (BIPOC) students who face financial barriers to attend a Canadian
college or university. Eligible students must have at least one parent who is considered
to be from the BIPOC group.

(2) ELIGIBLE PROGRAM: Candidates must have been accepted as a full-time student at a
Canadian college or university in an actuarial, mathematics, statistics, data management
or computer science program.

(3) SELECTION CRITERIA: Applicants must complete an application form (including a

personal essay) that provides confirmation of their BIPOC status, their personal
aspirations and financial situation in addition to their high school scholastic records.

(4) AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP: The goal is to assist the student financially rather than fully
fund the cost of the post-secondary education. Annual scholarships of (approximately)
$4,000 (University) and $2,000 (College) will be awarded to successful applicants for the
duration of the student’s program, to a maximum of 4 years, provided both that full-
time enrolment in the qualifying program is maintained with a minimum academic
standard, ordinarily a minimum grade of 2.8 (on maximum GPA of 4) or equivalent, and
that financial need continues. The AFC will award scholarships for a maximum of 4
years, or if less, the length of the program and subject to annual verification of the
student’s continuing eligibility.
