Reactivity Series and Metals Extraction

Name: _____________________ Section: ________

What is the formula for Potassium Chloride?

 Below are a series of possible reactions. Try to work out which is the most reactive.
Number Metal 1 vs. Metal 2 The most reactive metal
wins
1 Lead vs. Zinc Zinc
2 Magnesium vs. Hydrogen
3 Calcium vs. Lead
4 Copper vs. Gold
5 Silver vs. Calcium
6 Potassium vs. Carbon
7 Carbon vs. Calcium

 Translate the five chemical reactions taking place in the blast furnace during the extraction
of iron process into symbol equations.
Reaction Word equation
Stage 1: Carbon burning to make carbon dioxide
(this provides the heat)
(Hint: combustion reaction)

Stage 2: Carbon dioxide reacting with carbon to

form carbon monoxide.

Stage 3: Carbon monoxide reduces the iron oxide

(this is the main reaction)

Stage 4: Calcium carbonate decomposing

(Hint: remember the general equation of the
thermal decomposition)
Stage 5: Calcium oxide reacting with silicon dioxide
to form slag (CaSiO3)
1) Explain why reaction for stage 3 is an example of a REDOX reaction (i.e. it involves an oxidation
and a reduction).
