FUTURISTIC NURSING

INTRODUCTION
Nurses should be concerned about future directions for nursing. As the twenty-first century
approaches, opportunities abound to facilitate movement toward the goal of full professional status.
Whether nursing will have a bright, new professional image depends on how conscientious and
industrious nurses are in their efforts to achieve professionalism. If nursing is to fulfill its social
mandate of providing optimum healthcare for society, then the nurse should be responsible and
committed to this endeavor. For nursing to become a recognized, scientific profession dynamic
action is required, especially on the part of those referred to as professionals.

DEFINITION
Futuristic Nursing Define as the “ art of using the latest technology and science to promote quality
of life as defined by patients and families throughout their life experiences from birth to end of life.

Nursing is a dynamic profession undergoing change every moment “ we are in a new place, we are
not on the edge of old place. We are not pushing the envelope, we are totally a new envelope.so the
rule have changed, ever fundamental premise old way of thinking is no longer applies”

ASPECTS OF FUTURISTIC NURSING


Futuristic nursing can be classified in terms of nursing
A. Education,
B. Practice,
C. Research,
D. Administration,
And incorporation of all four components that might occur in the years to come.

A. NURSING EDUCATION
Nursing education has moved ahead from what it was in the beginning it is B.Sc., Post Basic B.Sc,
M.Sc, Ph.D. and M.Phil programs. It will be more Student Centered, Adaptive Curriculum,
teaching Innovation Systematic Approach System Approach, more Practical critical thinking,
Specialized education. New B.Sc. nursing degree program is a four-year fulltime program
comprising eight semesters, which prepares a student to become a registered nurse qualified to
practice in a variety of settings in either public/ government or private healthcare settings. It adopts
credit system and semester system as per UGC guidelines Because It increasing educational
opportunities for nurses, the growth of nursing as a profession, and a greater concern for job
enrichment in following departments
Nurse Practitioner provides care to the clients with complex problems and provide a more holistic
approach, attending to symptoms of non-pathologic conditions, comfort and comprehensiveness of care.
Nurse Practitioner have legal authority to implement patient management by ordering diagnostic tests and
treatments and prescribing medications.
Geriatric Nurse :- are trained in the specialized needs of the ageing adults, with emphasis on health
promotion, health maintenance and functional status. Age of the client is usually 65 and older.
Paediatric Nurse:- Paediatric nurse. provides specialty care for children from birth to 13 years of age.
Paediatric nurse practice in hospital ambulatory care, emergency care and physicians offices.
Psychiatric Nurse: Psychiatric nurse practitioners are specially trained to work in the mental -health They
assess patients, study their medical history and perform comprehensive mental-health testing.
Oncology Nurse : An Oncology Nurse work with patients who have or who are at risk of getting cancer.
Oncology Nurses provide necessary assessments, administer treatments and communicate with all patient
care providers to help develop a plan tailored to each patient's needs.
Hospice Nurse : A hospice nurse who cares for terminally ill patients near the end of their life, helping them
die as comfortably and .
Forensic Nurse: A forensic nurse works at the intersection of nursing and the criminal justice system to
provide nursing care to victim. Forensic nurses also provide emotional and psychological support, collect
evidence, and may perform evaluations of alleged perpetrators when necessary.
Military Nursing : Military is a part of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) of the Indian Army, first
formed under British rule in 1888. An officer in the Military Nursing Services is granted Permanent
Commission or Short Service Commission by a Govt Gazette Notification. The list of names are published
in the weekly gazette of Government of India from time to time.
Palliative Nurses: Seek to understand the individual’s lived experience of illness and suffering, to create
meaning, and assist patients and families to achieve optimal comfort and function.

B. NURSING PRACTICE
It has provided leadership opportunities and these have to be channelized appropriately to get
things done for the benefit of the patient and provide quality health care unaffordable by the patient
with the advent of specialists. Nurses as pain control nurses, infection control nurses, skin care
nurses, and diabetic educator nurses have a wide range of expanded roles. This also involves the
proper use of the nurse's time in providing health care services rather than being caught up in the
web of looking into only the environmental factors of the agency.
Robotic Nursing: The robotic technology in surgical fields has been a reality for decades, but recent trends
and developments indicate that the emergence of technology and even robotic technology in the delivery of
primary healthcare is a growing phenomenon.
Lifting Robot – is intended to assist nurses particularly in the aged care setting to lift or move patients. The
obvious benefit being that there is no need for nurses to compromise their own back-health in the process of
assisting their patients The use of a robot, as opposed to a mini-lifting machine is intended to make the
process a bit less intimidating for the patient.
‘Stan the Man’ – which is used to train nurses and health professionals. The robot is designed to respond to
various treatments applied by the trainee nurse. Rapid elimination of disease. robots might also produce
copies of themselves to replace worn-out units, a process called self-replication
The major advantage of robots is thought to be their durability, in theory, they can remain operational for
years, decades or centuries.
Space Nursing : Space Nursing Society (SNS) Founded in 1991, over 400 members from around the world.
Space Nursing provides a forum for the discussion and exploration of issues related to nursing in space and
its impact upon the understanding of earth-bound nursing through conference participation. Cardiac monitors
originated with space program.
Ultrasound studies assessing bone loss in astronauts abroad the space station could help nurse’s better care
for patients with osteoporosis
Evaluate emergency plans. Use of medications in space. Telemedicine opportunities. Performing surgery in
space. Developing a condition database to evaluate the risk of certain accidents or illness during a flight
Forensic Nurse: should be Specialized training in forensic evidence collection, criminal procedures, legal
testimony expertise. Liaison between the medical profession and that of the criminal justice system.

Clinical pathways: Clinical Pathway are tools used to guide evidence-based healthcare. Their aim is to
translate clinical practice guideline recommendations into clinical processes of care within the unique culture
and environment of a healthcare institution.
Tele Nursing: Utilization of telecommunication technology for medical diagnosis, treatment and patient care
the impact of utilization of telemedicine is improved quality care in various system specially in rural area.
Electronic Health Record :Is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart. Electronic Health Records are
patient-centered records that make information available instantly and securely to authorized users
Computer terminals located in nursing units in hospitals are revolutionizing nursing functions and
reducing the time needed to order medications and supplies from pharmacy, to transcribe and
implement medical regimens, and as mentioned previously, to develop and use computerized care
plans. Computers located in inpatient units in hospitals provide easy access for caregivers in
decision-making and acquiring more effective communication. Computer networking for nurse
administrators can save time, with inter-office memory and computerized and transmitted to other
officers within hospitals or university campuses and transmitted to other offices, thus providing the
capability for receiving feedback in far less time than in previous systems.
Nurse-led clinics: Nurses leading clinic on chronic disease Management like-Diabetes Clinic
Nurse conditions where regular follow-up and expertise is required, but also where a patient may
not necessarily need to see a physician at every visit.

C. NURSING RESEARCH
Research is directed towards building a body of nursing knowledge about “human responses to actual or
potential health problems”.
The vision for nursing in the 21st century is the development of scientific knowledge base that enables
nurses to implement on evidence-based practice. Evidence Based Practice incorporates critical thinking and
research utilization competencies. It stresses the use of research findings, and as appropriate, quality
improvement data and affirmed experiences to support a specific: To create a research culture. Provide high
quality educational programme to prepare a workforce of nurse scientist. Develop a sound research
infrastructure. Obtain sufficient funding for essential research.
Nursing research is essential to produce a specific theoretical knowledge base that professional
nurses can use to provide quality nursing care for individuals with critical or chronic illnesses or
people seeking health promotion and health maintenance services.
Over the next two decades, nursing research will increase their efforts to apply researchers will
increase their efforts to apply research findings to nursing practice.
As nurse researchers and nurse clinicians interact and collaborate, research findings will be utilized and
nursing practice will be greatly improved
D. NURSING ADMINISTRATION
It involves making policies and promoting the betterment of health care by being a member of the
committee within the organization and also interacting with other organizations to bring out
positive changes. Proper job descriptions and job satisfaction will make the work of a nurse easier
and for other healthcare professionals to know what to expect from the nurse. Placement More-Job
Opportunities Position Promotion Pay Scale Members of committees: Auditor
Placement in terms of education or experience both to be given their due importance.
Uniformity of entrance into education and service to overcome discrepancies.
Placement, position, and promotion based on capacity, education and skills, and efficiency.

CHALLENGES FOR FUTURISTIC NURSING
 Placement in terms of education or experience both to be given their due importance.
 Uniformity of entrance into education and service to overcome discrepancies.
 Placement, position, and promotion based on capacity, education and skills, and efficiency.
 Research dissemination and application with due importance to the findings rather than to the
methodology.
 Joint research, sponsorship, and institutional research with cooperation among the members.
 Increase in Indian authors and publications of nursing literature to be courageous.
 There are numerous challenges facing nursing from both within and outside and as a member
of this group. It becomes nurses’ duty to take up the relay in launching nursing further ahead
with the right fuel of efficiency, cooperation, and evidence-based practice to meet the changing
needs of society, health care, private and public players, the economy, and the government.
 The world health organization estimates that there will be shortage of 6 million nurses.
 This may cause disturbances in health care system
 In India yet 1167929 Nurses Registered on NRTS through all State Councils.
 India needs at least 4.3 million more nurses by 2024 to meet the WHO norms.

certainty other may come unexpected

CONCLUSION
A commitment to nursing and participation in its endeavors for survival by todays’registred nurse both for
themselves and for the future nurses -will enable the profession to emerge as an innovative force ,prepared to
face the numerous challenges and needs of healthcare consumers in the twenty -first Century .
Future of Nursing is of Great Scope with Challenges and Need of Healthcare Consumers .
