INTRODUCTION
1. General
The Fire Extinguishing System extinguishes the fire by means of
carbon dioxide gas. The system consists essentially of CO2 cylinders,
main isolating valve(s) manifold, CO2 nozzles in compartment protected,
and pipe lines connecting these main parts.
2. CO2 Cylinders
Special cylinders are manifolded together.
The carbon dioxide gas contained therein is a clean, dry, noncorrosive
and non-poisonous substance which will not support combustion.
It is stored under high pressure in the steel cylinders and extinguishes
fire by smothering it. An instruction chart is furnished to indicate
the proper discharge of cylinders for each compartment.
CO2 cylinders are installed in CO2 cylinder room.
4. CO2 Nozzles
The carbon dioxide pipe line terminates in Nozzles at the space
protected. In the machinery space, the Nozzles are installed,
through which liquid carbon dioxide is discharged and is
gasified instantly, thereby causing the atmosphere in the space
to become inert and smothering the fire.
Furthermore, there are sirens in the machinery space, which blow
automatically by operating the system and give an alarm to everyone
to escape from the space afire.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
7. Do not approach the space where fire has been extinguished with
an open flame or a lighted cigarette as the possible presence of
flammable vapors may cause an explosion.
OPERATING INSTRUCTION
A - As the men work their way deeper into the cargo hold,
check the atmosphere for gas concentration with Davy type
safety lamp to make sure the atmosphere is suitable for
breathing.
If the flame of the safety lamp flickers or is extinguished,
it indicates that there is insufficient oxygen to support life.
It is the safest to check with the safety lamp before any work
is started or before anyone enters the cargo hold.
B - While unloading the cargo, do not allow any more fresh air
to enter the space than required to breath.
CAUTION - IMPORTANT
Ordinary gas masks of the canister type should never be used in spaces
which contain carbon dioxide.
Under these conditions, there is a lack of oxygen and a person may
literally "drown" in a carbon dioxide atmosphere just as one
may drown in water, simply due to lack of oxygen.
MAINTENANCE
PERIODIC INSPECTIONS
The System as installed requires no more than ordinary care to insure
its proper operation at all times. Frequent inspections should be
made, however, as experience has shown that emergency equipment of
this kind is often unintentionally neglected or tampered with.
CAUTION :
DO NOT use water or oxygen for blowing out the pipe lines.
The use of oxygen is especially dangerous as the possible
presence of even a minute quantity of oil may cause an explosion.
CAUTION
CO2 cylinders are to be treated carefully, especially take care
not to fall down.
CAUTION
1. A new safety disc must be used, If damaged.
3. Remove the cylinder cap and return all caps to the store room.
NOTE :
Reinstallation of CO2 cylinders after weighing is to be practiced
regarding to above procedure.
STARTER
1. Function
By turning the upper handle of CO2 actuating cylinder,
CO2 actuating cylinder valve opens, the discharged CO2 will
open the CO2 extinguishant cylinder valve or P.O.D valve by
means of open the first and second discharge valve via
starting pipe.
2. Restoration
After discharge CO2, turn the handle fully clockwise.
Make sure seal of screw down valve, after installing recharged
starter to the starter box.
4. Weighing
CO2 cylinder is to be removed from support band and starting
pipe and CO2 cylinder is to be weighed by weighing scale.
If the total weight has decreased from rated weight stamped
on the cylinder by more than 0.2 kg, recharge the cylinder
to its Full rated capacity.
P.O.D VALVE
1. Function
Main isolating valve is a pressure-operated valve system,
which usually closed, and when the starter operates and
CO2 is led to this valve, it will be opened by the pressure
of CO2.
2. Restoration
Loosen mounting nut connected at starting pipe and
CO2 escape from there, this valve will be restored automatically.
3. Test procedure
1) Pressure Test
Connect the pressure-source to starting pipe port and
then apply pressure very gradually. If the valve is opened
under about 10kg/cm2 without time delay unit, it is normal.
2) Handling Test
Make sure that this valve can be opened by operating of the
handle during test of CO2 piping.
SAFETY OUTLET
1. Function
When CO2 leaks from CO2 cylinder and is stored in manifold,
there is a possibility of opening other CO2 cylinders by its
stored pressure. Therefore CO2 can be led to outside safely.
(When manifold pressure increases abnormally, safety disc
will be destroyed, and inner pressure will escape to protect
manifold.)
