    (ii) Explain how the function of the heart may be affected by a blockage of the blood vessel
    shown at X.
    With time, plaque hardens and begins to narrow the arteries and restrict the normal flow of
    fresh, oxygen- rich blood. This can lead to heart attack or stroke.

    (b) Figure 5 shows blood vessels used to transport fluids around the body of a mammal.

    (i) Which blood vessel, A or B, represents a vein?

    (ii) Identify ONE structure visible in Figure 5 which helps a vein to carry out its
    function. (1 mark)

    The structure is a valve.

    (iii) Explain how the structure identified in (b) (ii) allows the vein to fulfill its
    function.
    Valves in veins are bicuspid, meaning they have two flap-like structures
    that regulate blood flow. These flaps are made of elastic tissue.
    The valves main job is to keep the blood moving in one direction
    back up towards the heart.

    (iv) Diets high in saturated fats may lead to the formation of plaques in blood vessels.
    Explain how such deposits may lead to hypertension.
    As plaque builds up, the wall of the blood vessel thickens. This narrows the channel
    within the artery – reducing blood flow. That lessens the amount of oxygen and
    other nutrients reaching the body thus causing hypertension.
