Okay who among you get the secret code from the
phrase?

Anyone from the class?

Exactly, very good class!

D. Discussing new concepts Now that you have decoded the secret text. What do you
and practicing new skills. think is the connection of those words for today’s lesson?
#1
Yes, that’s right. Our topic for today is about stating thesis
statement of an academic text.

What is a thesis statement? Anyone class? Or who can give

me key words or concepts of a thesis statement?

Yes, that’s correct. And what kind of sentence is a thesis

statement?

A thesis statement expresses main idea. It is a statement that

summarizes your topic and declares your position on it.

It is the central idea of a multiple-paragraph composition. A

thesis statement tells the reader what the paper is about and
helps guide the writer and keep his arguments or ideas
focused.
Hence, a thesis paper is not a topic sentence. Why?

A topic sentence on the other hand is different from the

thesis statement. The thesis paper tells what the entire paper
is about. It is used to define the purpose of the paper, to
argue or to state a point. While the topic sentence shows
only what the paragraph is about. It is sometimes called the
focus sentence in the paragraph.

Did you get the difference of the two, class?

Now, there are two types of a thesis statement. The implicit

and explicit.

An implicit thesis statement indirectly states the information.

It is implied without being directly expressed.

Examples: She likes white shoes by saying, “She likes all

shoe colors but tan”.

There is a morality in his writings.

Next, we have is the explicit thesis statement.

Explicit statements are simple statements. It directly states

the information.
It clearly expressed, no room for confusion.

Examples: The daughter was sad, when her mother died.

She is extravagant. She spent a lot of money
during her birthday.

One thing and easiest to remember is when we say Implicit,

starts with the letter ‘I’ stands for Implied or Indirect. While
Explicit starts with letter ‘E’ stands for Well-Explained or
Directly Stated.

E. Discussing new concepts Now that we have identified what is a thesis statement and
and practicing new skills the differences between implicit and explicit, let’s try to spot
