Annual Report
The global hydrogen peroxide market is anticipated to be driven by the increasing product
demand in the production of sanitization and disinfection products in manufacturing industry.
After the recent pandemic outbreak of COVID-19, the demand for disinfectants including
institutional as well as residential disinfection products has grown exponentially. This has led to
the high demand for various disinfection chemicals including hydrogen peroxide across the world,
and the trend is likely to continue until the COVID-19 crisis subside.
Rapid urbanization and growing consumer awareness regarding preventive healthcare have
resulted in consumers spending more on disinfectants. Furthermore, increasing literacy rates
and rising awareness among consumers regarding workplace hygiene have augmented the
penetration of disinfectants in various places including office, hospital, malls, shopping centers
etc.
In developing countries such as China and India, quantity over quality wins. Consumers prefer
cheaper but highly effective disinfectants over high-performance natural ingredient-based
disinfectants. Thus, the demand for hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectants is expected to surge
over the forecast period. However, rising concerns regarding the harmful effects of hydrogen
peroxide compounds on human health have propelled the use of bio-based and sustainable
chemicals. The shifting focus toward bio-based chemicals can hamper the demand for hydrogen
peroxide over the forecast period.

Chemical companies and other international hygiene product manufacturers expanded their
disinfectant product manufacturing capacities to meet the increasing demand globally. Furthermore,
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared a list of 55 products & formulations that could
be utilized as surface disinfectants, among which 47 products had hydrogen peroxide as a key
component in their product compositions. Hydrogen peroxide acts as a strong disinfectant against an
array of fungi, bacteria, and viruses. The compound is also extensively used for water disinfection in
swimming pools and overhead water tanks.
The increasing world population has led to the high demand for clean water supply for everyday
residential as well as commercial consumption. The demand for hydrogen peroxide has, therefore,
grown significantly over the past decades across the globe. Furthermore, with the increase in
disposable income among the population across developing as well as developed economies, the
demand for indoor swimming pools has also risen. These factors are cumulatively projected to boost the
demand for hydrogen peroxide in water treatment and disinfection applications globally over the
forecast period.

The compound also has the potential to cause tissue damage due to its acidic nature. The substance is
a commonly utilized bleach in household cleaning and disinfectant products and, therefore, the
handling and movement of the product is recommended to be done as per protocols issued by various
government health agencies and regulatory bodies. Being a corrosive compound, the consumption of
hydrogen peroxide may be restricted across few developed economies over the coming years.
► Determining reliable sources of raw material and optimizing supply chain efficiency
► Identifying reliable feedstock suppliers and developing strong & long-term relationships
with them to maintain uninterrupted raw material supply and avoid fluctuations in product
prices
► The aforementioned factor poses a significant challenge for small players or new entrants
as established market players use their own patented technologies. Therefore, developing
new technologies and competing with other global players becomes tough and challenging
for small/new players.
Partnerships pivotal
► Mergers & acquisitions and collaborations are some of the key developmental strategies
adopted by the global players to explore the untapped markets and compete with local
players that have a competitive advantage of better reach to the local consumers.
Therefore, looking out for right partnerships with feedstock producers, suppliers,
distributors, or just local manufacturers and achieving success out of it poses as a
significant challenge to the global players.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the rise in the demand for sanitizing and disinfecting products,
which, in turn, has positively affected hydrogen peroxide market. The demand for disinfecting products
skyrocketed during the months of March and April 2020; the product demand in the following months
also remained high with categories such as sanitizers, disinfectants, and bleaches.
Multiple standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been issued by various governments across the
globe to sanitize the commercial places such as offices, railway stations, airports, bus stands, hospitals,
schools, hotels, malls, retail stores among others as well as private spaces at definite intervals to
subside the impact of the coronavirus spread. Moreover, the growing awareness regarding personal
hygiene is one of the major factors to increase the penetration of disinfectants in the market. Therefore,
the demand for disinfectants is expected to grow significantly.

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as a bleaching agent in industries such as detergent, paper &
pulp, textiles, personal care, and electronics, wherein the hydrogen peroxide concentration in all
compositions varies with the pH levels. Hydrogen peroxide acts as a bleaching agent because of the
release of nascent oxygen during the reaction.
In textiles industry, bleaching properties and conditions vary depending on the type of fabric in use,
machinery in use, and degree of whiteness required. Hydrogen peroxide is also used in the formulation
of detergents and other household products. It is used to whiten fabrics remove stains and brighten the
color. Hydrogen peroxide bleach is more environment-friendly than chlorine-based bleaches like sodium
hypochlorite. However, the concentrations of the compound with respect to water are recommended
and monitored by various agencies as high concentration bleaches cause severe damage to human
health.

The depleting water level necessitates the need for wastewater treatment. In the wastewater treatment
industry, hydrogen peroxide is used as a bleaching agent to disinfect the water to rid it off harmful
bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. In wastewater treatment, typically 35% or 50% concentration of
hydrogen peroxide is used. Growing wastewater treatment activities due to rapidly increasing population
and growing use of water in various industries coupled with depleting freshwater reserves around the
globe are expected to cumulatively increase the demand for hydrogen peroxide in the market over the
forecast period.
For instance, in the U.S., hydrogen peroxide is frequently used to treat individual water supplies as it
prevents taste, color, corrosion, and micro-organism degradation. According to Infrastructure Report
Card, 2021, the U.S. has over 16,000 wastewater treatment plants and currently, about 62.5 billion
gallons of wastewater are being treated every day to meet the water demand. Thus, increasing demand
for wastewater activities boosts the demand for hydrogen peroxide over the forecast period. However,
stringent government regulations regarding wastewater treatment activities can hamper the growth of
hydrogen peroxide in the market.

Report
The demand for hydrogen peroxide in the U.S. is mainly driven by textile, food processing, and
disinfectant-based applications. According to Commerce Department’s Office of Textiles & Apparel
(OTEXA), the U.S. imports of textiles have considerably declined in 2020. This decline shows that there
was a decrease in the production of finished textile goods in the U.S. over the last few months.
A decline of 32% and in terms of value, USD 6 billion in imports in July 2020 as compared to the same
quarter last year indicates a steep fall in the country’s imports. This major decline is due to the spread
of COVID-19 virus coupled with low purchasing power due to decrease in income levels. However, a V-
shaped recovery is expected once the COVID-19 subsides and the demand for hydrogen peroxide in
textile industry increases as the market condition improves gradually.

Report
The demand for hydrogen peroxide in the Canadian pulp and paper industry is expected to get affected
owing to a decline in overall weak global demand and because of wood fiber supply chain challenges.
According to the article published by Annex Business Media in January 2021. The pulp and paper
manufacturing saw a decline of 7.9% from 2018 and it is expected to decline further also. Moreover,
wood pulp production has decreased by 4.9% from 2018–2019. The overall consumption of pulp and
paper is expected to remain low over the forecast period. Therefore, the demand for hydrogen peroxide
is expected to remain in the paper and pulp industry.

Europe is run by major industrial economies, such as the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands,
with an increasing number of manufacturers and various market suppliers penetrating the regional
ecosystem. The European hydrogen peroxide market is largely driven by the increasing demand for
disinfectants post the COVID-19 outbreak. The UK was the most impacted country by the outbreak,
which led to high demand for disinfectants across the country.
Europe is observed to be one of the largest consumers of disinfectant products for public area cleaning
as well as residential hygiene and sanitization purposes, and the trend is likely to continue in the
coming years. These factors are projected to drive the demand for hydrogen peroxide over the predicted
period.

Germany is one of the most prominent markets across Europe in terms of industrial sector contribution
to GDP development and surge in manufacturing practices across the country. High consumer demand
for household consumer goods, cosmetics, electronic goods, and more are observed to be driving the
manufacturing sector in the country. Further, a surge in the sales of the aforementioned industries has
been driving the demand for hydrogen peroxide over the forecast period. According to Statista, the
personal care market in Germany is expected to reach USD 13,268 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR
of 8.43% from 2021 to 2025 because of increasing disposable income coupled with increasing
awareness regarding personal care.

France is a major chemical manufacturing hub in Europe that has been of significant importance since
the past decade. The advent of chemical formulators in the country led to the increased demand for
hydrogen peroxide for manufacturing various chemicals. Furthermore, the French Service Public
d'Assainissement Non-Collectif also made several regulations for the delivery of safe and treated water.
These factors are anticipated to augment the growth of hydrogen peroxide market in the country over
the forecast period.

The Netherlands is one of the highly affected countries by coronavirus in Europe. The demand for
hydrogen peroxide in the country significantly increased during the second and third quarters of 2020
for sanitization and disinfection applications. The market in the Netherlands is likely to be driven by high
demand for public sanitization and personal hygiene to contain the spread of coronavirus. To meet the
increasing demand for disinfectants in the country, many companies like DSM have started producing
disinfectants. The company has started the production of disinfectants at its manufacturing facility
located in Waalwijk, the Netherlands. The growing demand for disinfectants is likely to boost the
demand for hydrogen peroxide across the country.

Asia Pacific is the emerging regional market. China, India, and Japan are the key manufacturing
countries in the region, with China as the global manufacturing leader. The demand for hydrogen
peroxide in the region influenced by personal care products, wastewater treatment activities, dental
care, household bleaching products, and chemical industry applications. Growing population in
countries such as India and China, coupled with the rise in income level and purchasing power parity,
has led to the high demand for personal and household products including detergents and bleaches.
These factors are projected to drive the demand for hydrogen peroxide in the region in the coming
years. In addition, a rapidly growing number of new business establishments across the region,
especially in India, is projected to boost the demand for hydrogen peroxide in several industries over the
forecast period.

The demand for hydrogen peroxide in the country is projected to rise on account of the increasing
demand for sanitization & disinfection products and chemical manufacturing. The rapidly growing
chemical manufacturing industry in China is further projected to augment the demand for hydrogen
peroxide in the formulation of other chemicals. According to the CRISIL report, China’s share in the
global chemical industry increased from 24% in 2010 to 37% in 2018.
The growth is attributed to the rapidly increasing demand for chemicals in various end-use industries
such as personal care, construction, and electronics; favorable government policies such as the ease of
environmental norms and government subsidies; and availability of cheap labor in the country.
Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic had a severe impact on China’s sanitization aspects, and cleaning &
disinfection activities grew significantly in the country since the first quarter of 2020. Thus, increasing
sanitation activities in the country are anticipated to boost the demand for hydrogen peroxide in the
production of cleaning and disinfection products over the forecast period.

The governments of developing countries in Asia Pacific such as India are promoting foreign
investments to establish the countries as manufacturing hubs for a majority of the chemicals worldwide.
India is characterized by the presence of less stringent regulations pertaining to the use of surfactants.
Thus, key manufacturers of surfactants are identifying growth opportunities in the country owing to the
easy availability of raw materials at a low cost. India is one of the significant markets for cleaning and
sanitization products across Asia Pacific due to the increasing awareness among the native population
about personal hygiene and cleanliness in public areas and institutions because of COVID-19.
Furthermore, India’s water treatment industry is a fast-growing industry. The country recorded USD 2.4
billion in revenue from the industry in 2019 and is anticipated to reach USD 4.3 billion by 2025. This is
largely due to the rapid industrialization in the country and increasing demand for municipal water along
with sewage treatment plants. Thus, the demand for hydrogen peroxide in water disinfection application
is expected to increase over the forecast period.

Japan is a key market for cosmetics and personal care products across Asia Pacific. Japan is the
second-largest producer of cosmetic and personal care products after the U.S. Since the last few years,
the Japanese cosmetics and personal care industry has witnessed a drastic increase in value from
approximately USD 5.86 billion in 2012 to 8.15 billion in 2019. The increasing popularity of skin fix
makeup and rising consciousness about branded products are the key drivers of cosmetics industry.
Personal care industry in Japan comprises pharmaceutical, medical, cleaning, cosmetics, and some
other body care products. In 2020, the revenue was estimated around USD 6.7 million and expected to
grow at CAGR of 8.8% from 2020 to 2024. Increasing demand for textile products in the country is also
expected to fuel the demand for hydrogen peroxide in textiles industry. The average annual turnover of
the country’s textiles industry is marked at USD 96 billion. Thus, rising demand for textiles products in
the country is anticipated to propel the consumption of hydrogen peroxide over the forecast period.

Report
South America has around one-third of the global water reserves, yet water management system in the
region is below average due to the lack of proper infrastructure and treatment plants. However, as cited
by the development bank of the region, South America is projected to witness huge growth opportunities
for water treatment activities in the coming years. Projects for water treatment plants have been
sanctioned in major cities such as Neiva, Manizales, Pereira, Bucaramanga, Cali, Tunja, and Bogota.
Moreover, more concession contracts are likely to be taken place in Brazil in the coming years, thereby
generating higher demand for hydrogen peroxide in the region over the forecast period.
The demand for cleanliness and disinfectant products in the region has increased significantly since the
second quarter of 2020. The COVID-19 outbreak led to a shortage of disinfectant products in the initial
stage in countries like Brazil; however, with government initiatives, the supply of disinfectant products
across Brazil stabilized. Currently, sanitizing products and disinfectants are substantially available in the
local market, and the demand for these products is anticipated to be high in the coming years. As a
result, hydrogen peroxide market is likely to witness growth over the forecast period.

The Middle East & Africa has a history of poor water quality and distribution for the regional population
due to the lack of proper storage facilities and treatment plants. This has led to the spread of various
diseases such as cholera and dengue in the past. As a result, the local authorities and government
agencies started increasingly focusing on wastewater treatment projects to supply disinfected water for
residential consumption as well as commercial applications and farming.
Growing consumer awareness about the ill effects of consuming untreated water has further pushed
the introduction of various chemicals in water treatment applications. These factors are likely to
augment the demand for hydrogen peroxide in the region for disinfecting water sources over the
forecast period. However, a huge amount of investment is required to develop and set up a wastewater
treatment system in the region.

Moreover, in order to meet the growing demand for hydrogen peroxide, the companies are investing in
the expansion of their production capacities. For instance, Airedale Chemical has invested
approximately USD 60,000 in its manufacturing facilities to manufacture hydrogen peroxide-based
disinfectant products. Furthermore, to earn decent profit margins and economies of scale, the
companies are increasing their product prices. For instance, Arkema increased the prices of its
hydrogen peroxide products by about USD 36 per dry metric ton (DMT) to cover the increasing cost of
labor and electricity.
Manufacturers of hydrogen peroxide have been actively collaborating with the market leaders to
enhance their market penetration and product positioning. Furthermore, the manufacturing process of
hydrogen peroxide varies as per the requirements of end users such as paper & pulp, wastewater
treatment, mining, food & beverage, personal care, healthcare, textiles, and electronics among other
industries. Therefore, companies engaged in the production of hydrogen peroxide mostly prefer a value-
based pricing strategy to capture higher profitability.
The high demand for these products offers an opportunity for manufacturing companies to analyze the
customers’ needs and value proposition of competition in the market. Feedstock and process
technologies play a vital role in the manufacturing of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide
manufacturers are engaged in developing and innovating new process technology to reduce their
manufacturing cost & time and simultaneously increasing their operational efficiency.
